TimE (3123) - Tokyo, JAPAN - JUN 22, 2004
A rich Belgian dark ale that has toffee and sweet chocolatey sugar notes, but I found it a bit cloying and a bit too sweet, however, it certainly was a relief from ubiquitous pale Czech lagers. Opps my mistake, this was a lager, but it tasted, as noted below, like a Belgian ale.

Gazza (726) - Worcester, Worcestershire, ENGLAND - APR 14, 2004
Imagine my surprise when I tasted this semi-dark beer - it was like being transplanted into Belgium! It is brewed, intentionally or not, in the style of Gouden Carolus with a rich malty flavour, leaning towards toffee with some spiciness and a nutty finish. Unusual and pretty good. (Draught at Klasterni, Praha)

motelpogo (6453) - Plzen, CZECH REPUBLIC - MAR 28, 2003
went to the monastery expecting it to be a tourist trap with boring beer but this is very original stuff. on tap amazingly full of life and no worse bottled. had an absolutely massive head which my nose made a big dent in as i tried to take a first sip. slightly cloudy deep amber. some bockish black bean and toffee apple with a slight raspiness balanced by some belgian tasting yeast. apple peel bitterness, smooth and tasty and with a weird treacle aroma. good to know that while standard czech beers are declining in quality, there are some new breweries like this, avar, vrchlabi and berounsky medved who are coming up with adventurous but distinctly czech beers

eczematic (1319) - Adelaide, AUSTRALIA - MAR 10, 2003
i'll always be grateful to motelpogo for lugging this one back from the czech republic in his smelly backpack. this is an amazing beer. i thought the czechs couldn't do anything good over 5% but no. this one combines the fullness and richness of a doppelbock with the mysteriously vanishing soft drinkability of a czech pilsener. colour-wise it's bizarre: a deep sort of strawberry-amber (but then i always get pink and orange wrong). the mouthfeel is amazingly buttery, sticking to the roof of your mouth lonnggg after you finish. as well as the amazing, rich fudgey malt flavour you get heaps of fresh spicy saazy tingle, and enough bitterness to balance it perfectly without sticking out. beautiful stuff.
