on tap at Baracnycka Rychta in Prague. Dark brown colour, impressive head. Flavours of roasted malt, caramel and hints of coffee and biter chocolate. Rounded with a hoppy backgrounds, which makes the beer neither bitter nor sweet, but very well balanced.

Bottle. Sweet dark malty aroma with caramel, mild roast and hints of astringent veggie. Dark red-brown with a light brown, frothy and clingy head. Body is thin and a tad sticky. Roast with caramel and a little grit, medium astringent bitterness throughout leading to a dry and toffeeish aftertaste. Some nice hoppy funk in the middle- and endgame. Good balance between sweetness an dbitterness. Flavor is complex and comes in waves. Took me a while to get into this (its charms are subtle), but I do like it quite a bit.

[bottle from Galerie Pivni in Prague] Clear, reddish brown with a nice, lasting yellowy foam that leaves plenty of lacing. Refreshingly "dark" aroma for this style containing coffee and smokey bacon blended with subtle yet typical Pilsner hops. While the aroma was above average, the flavour was a bit disappointing: fairly sweet with pilsnery hopping and obvious alcohol. A little bit of watermelony caramel as well. Medium body, medium carbonation.

From the bottle pours a very dark red, almost black with a light tan head that lasts. Very smooth throughout with a mild roastiness and hints of chocolate in the malt. Very creamy texture with a well balanced finish.

UPDATED: SEP 25, 2005 Bottle (bought at the brewery): Dark amber coloured, huge rocky brownish head, very long lasting; only shy malty nose with some fruity traces, too, and - yes - a touch of "cellulose-thinner" ! Weak sweetish maltiness in the beginning, slight bitter-malty taste, distinctive bitterness (cacao, chocolate) in the longer lasting finish; not bad, but rather thin for a 13° (5,2% ABV) brew, only small aroma....and brewed by the use of an ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER ("s umelym sladitlem") ! Presumable the reason for this cellulose-thinner aroma ?

The Lure:
A dark burgundy sheet sends mineral and vegetables warnings. Something might be off. A little sweetness pierces through, but this is not appealing.

The Festivities:
A frothy feel offers light roastiness, shy caramel, licorice and fruity shadows. Nothing’s off here thankfully. Barely any aftertaste, this bottle is mainly watery and bland, and moreover light years away from their ingeniously different and tasty Rytir Bitter.

Transcendence:
Buying bread that looked good and discovering that it was just swollen with air.
