KyotoLefty (6696) - Kyoto, JAPAN - AUG 23, 2010
UPDATED: SEP 8, 2010 Draught at Svijansky Rytir in Prague. Sweet, creamy, chocolate and caramel aroma. Looks like a root beer float. Creamy flavor, chocolate and caramel, slightly burnt and earthy, with some minerals. Slightly watery at the end. Ok, rather average dunkel--missing something. Soft, silky body, very delicate. A nice drinker.

On tap at Cesky Raj , Wroclaw
Aroma sweet darker show with lighter caramel and brown sugar notes. Gentle hop finishing. 6-
Appearance excellent appearance. Fine thick haze on light garnet with touches of brown. Large, long lasting stiff beige top. Is this natural or nitro in play? 4+
Flavor and Palate : Caramel on earthy tones . wood , mineral cellar like depth. Soft fine texture. Very smooth , not too sweet. It does have right amount of dryness at finish, Balanced well measured dunkel. Solid choice.

(Draught at Svijansky Rytir, Prague, 27 July 2011) Very dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dark bread, caramel and dried fruit. Malty, roasted taste with caramel, dark bread, rasins and a certain sweetness in a finish with a gentle bitterness. Medium body. Quite nice.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at Klub Skorpion, Pilsen, Czech Republic
The look: Very dark amber body with a medium tan head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a bit less fruity, a bit more roasted with light cacao notes.

(Rating #1557)

Bottled 500ml. -Courtesy of and shared with Doggythedog (thanks!)
Reddish/brown coloured, medium to big pale beige head, mild roasty nose. Roasted malt, brown sugar and some faint fruityness. Touch of caramel in the finish. Watery palate. According to label this one is "Beer of Czech Republic 2009". My vote is against.

On tap in Melnik, Czech Rep. Pours brown with a moderate creamy tan head.Strong roasted malt aroma. Nice velvet mouthfeel, taste of dark malts, liquorice and pepper. Taste starts sweet turns spicy, and ends with a long nice peppery aftertaste. For me this is like a Primator Stout "light".

From a 50 cl bottle. Clear chestnut, medium beige head. Toffeish and caramelly aroma with some chocolate, and herbal hops. Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Semi sweet, low bitterness.

Bottle. Slightly richer dunkel, but very soft. Slightly roasty/toasty, with caramelly malt, pretty simple, but well balanced, with some bitterness in the finish. Pretty decent.
