[bottle from Galerie Pivni in Prague] Clear, reddish brown with a nice, lasting yellowy foam that leaves plenty of lacing. Refreshingly "dark" aroma for this style containing coffee and smokey bacon blended with subtle yet typical Pilsner hops. While the aroma was above average, the flavour was a bit disappointing: fairly sweet with pilsnery hopping and obvious alcohol. A little bit of watermelony caramel as well. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized deScriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at Klub Skorpion, Pilsen, Czech Republic
The look: Very dark amber body with a medium tan head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a bit less fruity, a bit more roasted with light cacao notes.

Barva: černá, neprůhledná. Pěna nažloutlá hustá držící. Vůně: karamelově sladová. Chuť: výrazně sladová se stopou karamelu a lehce nahořklá.

Dark ruby amber and decent sandy cap fading head. Cutting sweet and dank maltiness. Initial taste is herby, ashen and lean soapiness. Quite fizzy, quite lean. Brassy bitter finish. Bottle fae BenH fae Czech.

Look: dark red, transparent, unstable head. Aroma: burned sugar, some chocolate notes, yeasts. Taste: moderate sweet with prominent bitterness. Flavour: roasted, burned sugar, roasted sunflower seed, some yeasty and fruity notes. Spicy hoppy bitternes in the aftertaste, some astringency. Not bad.

Bottle. It pours a clear, copper-colored body under a small, creamy, beige head. Looking quite good actually. Decent aroma with caramel tending towards butterscotch, sweetness, fruits and noble hops. Sweet, full-bodied mouthfeel with caramel, and some hops giving a decent bitterness. Some bitterness in the finish too, but it wouldn’t hurt from a little more of it. A decent beer, but I could easily do without the butterscotch. (090508)
