500ml Bottle from Prague Airport (60Czk):

Sweet with some sugar and chocolate coming through alongside some floral notes, background fruits and light hops. Some earthy notes, raisin and a little treacle coming through too. Mahogany brown with a large, 2 fingers tall, foamy beige head with good retention & some lacing on the sides too. Sweet although not as sweet as the aroma, slightly more subdued with more of an earthy flavour. Some raisin, hints of chocolate, caramel & dark malts with an almost nutty taste. Smooth with about low to medium carbonation & an almost creamy body, the beer also has hints of spice through it.

A mellow and light taste that was easy enough to drink but didn’t really do enough to grab my attention or have me want to desperately take another drink. It was nice & the taste was well balanced but it just seemed like one big blur & I doubt it will be a memorable one.

[bottle from Galerie Pivni in Prague] Clear, reddish brown with a nice, lasting yellowy foam that leaves plenty of lacing. Refreshingly "dark" aroma for this style containing coffee and smokey bacon blended with subtle yet typical Pilsner hops. While the aroma was above average, the flavour was a bit disappointing: fairly sweet with pilsnery hopping and obvious alcohol. A little bit of watermelony caramel as well. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
-------- /> How: Tap at Klub Skorpion, Pilsen, Czech Republic
The look: Very dark amber body with a medium tan head
To me a typical Czech Tmavé (Czech Black Lager) is: Dark malts and barely any roastiness sensation. Some dark fruits flavours (raisins with a little figs, dates and prunes) wrapped in smooth dark caramel (borderline toffee) and a subtle chocolate note. A bit bready. Moderately sweet without much hops presence and only a mild bitterness (voluntary unbalanced it seems). Very smooth body, like a watery cream.
This one: As above but a bit less fruity, a bit more roasted with light cacao notes.
