COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark, hoppy Floridian Dark Ale. This award winning dark ale features a rich smoothness and complex hop profile.

Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale is an American-style Black Ale at the low end of the IPA alcohol range (6.4% ABV), with an abundance of hop flavor and aroma. It represents what we consider to be an improvement on what are being called Black IPAs, or Cascadian Dark Ales, deriving its "darkness" from chocolate wheat malt rather than the bitter roasted barley used in most examples of this new style. The name is derived from Florida’s "Blackwater" rivers, which are dark in tannins from the native oak trees.

Blackwater was created through a collaboration between Head Brewer Craig Birkmaier and Eric Luman, Head Brewer at Jacksonville’s Green Room brewery. It was judged the Best Beer in Florida at the 2011 Best Florida Beer Competition.

Draft… Hunahpu’s Day 2011… Pours clear and black with flashes of ruby around the edges of the glass. Piney, hempen hops and burnt malt are the aromatic standouts. Medium-bodied and fizzy. The flavor leans slightly bitter with plenty of black malt and herbal hops. Short, crisp, mostly clean finish. Refreshing.

750ml bottle acquired in trade. Poured a dark brown, almost black with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roast, coffee, pine, and floral. Tastes of coffee, roast, pine, some earth, and lighter chocolate.

Tap at Green Room Brewing in Jax Beach, FL. Pours a deep, clear maroon near black with a thin, coffee head. Spots of lace. Nose is muted- small ash and raisins with something like bacon wrapped plum, dark cherry, and tobacco. All is a bit hard to pick out without the typical robust aromatic hop nose you would expect in this style. Taste is prickly up front with bitter melon rind hops but no explosion you might want from Black IPA. More fruits, lemon, and gin spices like coriander. Carbonation is way to high. Body is a bit too attenuated. Finishes with some big resinous hop but the palate is still too thin and even comes off as lemony tart. Decent.

Sample at Dunedin. 4000 beers, with no end in sight. This brew pours black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with notes of malt and piney hops. Medium body with flavors of toasted malt, resiny hops, pine and citrus. The finish is hoppy with a lingering citrus aftertaste. Solid Black IPA all around.

Tasted at the Cigar City – Swamp Head tap take-over event. It pours muddy mahogany with tan head. The aroma offers up citrus hops, sweet citrusy jam, citrus hop resin and a modest level of dark roasted malts. The taste is crisp and hoppy citrusy goodness going from orange peel to tangelo to sweet orange marmalade and then into bitter grapefruit juice. I only get modest to mild levels of various dark roasted malts and chocolate malts. Yummy easy drinking brew, and I drank a lot of this during the event, but this is on the outer edges (the sessionable edge) of this new beer style.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a near clear dark brown with a fluffy tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a bit of earthy dark grains with some light fruits, a bit of pine and some chocolate backing. Flavor has a combination of earthy dark grains and pine with a bit of light fruit underlying.

3/18/11. On tap. Mild roasted aroma with big citrusy catpee hops. Bigger roasted coffee and chocolate flavor again lingering with citrus hops. If not for the watery body and somewhat watery flavor, this wouldn’t be half bad.

Tallahassee, Fl - Fermentation Lounge - on tap. Dark, black. tar-like pour, medium thick mocha colored head, nice sticky web of lacing. Fresh, aromatic spruce-like aroma with a touch of earthiness followed by some fresh black dirt accents. Brief licorice notes in the flavor, some chocolate accents, citrus hints and an earthy back end of fresh potting soil. Mouthfeel is sufficiently chewy and thick. All in all, very solid and I am liking what I am seeing from this brewery thus far.

Thanks to my 2013 Summer Secret Santa for this one! Pours reddish brownish black, with a huge tan head. Spicy, piney aroma, with notes of coffee. Flavor is much more coffee-ish than the aroma suggests, plus some piney flavors mixed in. Some other vague woody notes as it warms. Crisp finish. Really tasty stuff!
