COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Batch 200. A Wee Heavy Scottish Ale with a strong peat character. Bogs of Islay is our tribute to the world renowned ales and distilled spirits produced in Scotland, many of which derive their unique character from local water sources that filter through peat bogs. The peat is also used to smoke barley that is used in the production of Scottish Ales and Single Malt Whiskys. The bogs of the Isle of Islay contribute to what many consider to be the wildest and most characterful exemplars in the malt-whisky spectrum. For Batch 200 we produced two Scottish Ales in parallel, then blended portions together to create Bogs of Islay, a Wee Heavy with 7.8% alcohol by volume. The first runnings from two mashes were collected to produce a high gravity Wee Heavy, which was fermented using the traditional Scottish Ale yeast, to produce a fruity malt bomb. Thirty pounds of peated barley were used in the dual mashes, and a few pounds of peated barley were added to each mash as we collected the second runnings. The second runnings were used to produce an 80 Shilling Scottish Ale, which was fermented with our house American Ale yeast, to produce a lighter ale with strong peat character. After both beers were fully fermented and aged for several weeks we determined the ideal blending ratio and produced about 14 barrels of Bogs of Islay, while retaining portions of the component beers for barrel aging and special projects. Our Batch 200 tribute rewards those who savor the unique flavor and aroma characteristics of Scottish Ales and Whiskys with a rich malt experience and an extra layer of complexity provided by the Bogs of Islay.

Draft at Oblivion Taproom. Great beer. I really enjoyed it. A good amount of peat and a little smoke. Nice chocolate backbone. Drinks easy, with full flavor. Very good.

on tap-pours dark amber with a light tan head. Aroma is caramel-medium malt, then smoky/peat/wood. Taste is medium malt-smoky/peat/caramel, some earthy hops.

Slightly smokey and peaty but not overpowering. Nice head and aroma. Mellow hop flavors on finish.

Draft… Pours a way dark mahogany hue with a mid-sized, creamy, mushroom-colored head. Good retention. The bouquet is a collection of caramel and chocolate with a splash of crusted port and a touch of peat. Full-bodied and fatty with buzzing carbonation. The flavor is peaty, malty, vinous and sweet. Finishes sweet, a touch vinous and a hint minerally. Nice job!

On tap at fermentation lounge. Dark brown pour with a sturdy tan head. Aroma is mineral, smoke and malt. Taste is tobacco, leather, smoke, earthy, dark fruit. The leathery vibe wins out. Leaves a faint long tinny aftertaste. Interesting - little smokey for my tastes.

Poured an amber color with aromas f peat, earth, smoke, and a touch of dark fruit. Flavor is the same with some added malt, but peat is the main focus on the palate. Decent beer at the FBG Beerfest this year.

Pours amber mostly clear in colo with a light tan head. The aroma hasw a bit of peat for sure. The flavor is light, sweet, earthy and peaty, but not powerful, on a smooth perfectly carbonated bosy.

On draft at the FBG Fest 2012. Pours a nice deep amber cola color with an off-white head. Nose is some peat, some light maple, some earth, a hint of smoke, and lots of malt with intermittent hits of dark fruit. Flavor is similar with big malt presence, light dark fruit, some smoke, some peat, and a hint of alcohol. Medium to full in body and enjoyable overall. Congrats to Luke, Craig, and Co for 200 batches!
