Could a stout have inspired Catherine II, the 18th century Empress of Russia to greatness? Beer historians note that Catherine took a liking to stouts when visiting England and asked that the English stout be shipped to the Russian Court in St. Petersburg. It arrive spoiled, probably because it froze on the long voyage from England to Russia - Catherine was not pleased. So the Thrale Brewery in London, created a bitter, 10.5% alcohol stout that became known as Imperial Russian Stout. Swamp Head’s Russian Imperial Stout was inspired by the awesome Imperial Stouts created by the modern day American craft brewing revolution. We think Catherine would be inspired too!

Bottle thanks to Nick. Pours a dark brown with medium creamy tan head that lasts. The aroma is strong chocolate, roast, some butter tho. Medium mouthfeel with nice roast, chocolate, with sweet finish. Good.

Chemical, PLA doh aroma. Inky brew. There’s a chemical cast over this in the front palate, which dominates everything else, followed by a more mellow sweetness. Meh. On tap, Proof.

Draft at Proof. Black pour with a small creamy tan head. Chocolatey and roasted malts on the tip of the nose with some lingering earthy hops and anise seed. Flavor is very similar to the aroma with a rich body and some bitterness on the back end. Not bad.

jbruner (4107) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Pours a dark brownish-black on tap with no real head or lacing, but a nice brown film on the glass on the way down. Aroma was roasted malts, dark chocolate, dirt, slight licorice spiciness, and booze. Taste follows, with heavier spice, earthy notes, and an alcoholic, acetone finish. Meh, there are a lot better imperial stouts out there, even just in Florida.

Aroma of Chilli, hot coffee, and really dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is very thick AMD oily. Flavor is very hot AMD very rough, almost spicy. This is far from smooth, subtle, or balanced. Not a fan.
