COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Catherine II, the 18th century Empress of Russia, is said to have been the inspiration behind the creation of the Imperial Russian Stout, an intensely flavored, big, dark ale, with a noticeable alcohol presence. Legend has it that Catherine also had a voracious sexual appetite; she was known to have many lovers, but the story about the stallion was probably a myth. At Swamp Head we have a passion for the creation of great craft beers, so we infused our Imperial Russian Stout with organic cocoa nibs and fair trade coffee, to create a sensual stout with an extra kick. We think Catherine’s Passion would be aroused by this stout...ale.

Bottle shared thanks to beerman6686. Pours a deep blackish brown with a brown head. Aroma of cocoa powder, smokey bacon, ash. Taste is slightly acrid, ashy, sweet up front with a bitter finish. Pretty similar to expedition. Good stuff but harsher than I usually like.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate/cocoa nibs, light vanilla, and espresso. It pours pours a dark brown with no transparency and a small tan head that quickly fades to a thin ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate/cocoa nibs, light molasses, and a touch of dark fruits. He finish has moderate-heavy roasted coffee, burnt notes, light anise, and a touch of smoke. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat oily mouthfeel. Overall, it’s solid, but a little too burnt.

Bottle: Thanks, Jason. Oily black, thick looking pour. Head forms for only a small second, immediately reducing to a thin collar, light-tan in color. Aroma of oily, dark roasted coffee beans, faint green pepper spiciness, roasted malts, a small hint of vanilla, with just a touch of sweetness towards the back-end. Heavy coffee bean flavor; very roasted, almost charred. Touch of burnt brown sugar, highly roasted malt, bitter dark cocoa, a strong earthy & ashy hop presence. Pretty noticeable alcohol middle to end. A little black licorice in the aftertaste with bitter, unsweet cocoa dust & overloaded roast lingering. Silky, lightly creamy body.
