COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark, hoppy Floridian Dark Ale. This award winning dark ale features a rich smoothness and complex hop profile.

Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale is an American-style Black Ale at the low end of the IPA alcohol range (6.4% ABV), with an abundance of hop flavor and aroma. It represents what we consider to be an improvement on what are being called Black IPAs, or Cascadian Dark Ales, deriving its "darkness" from chocolate wheat malt rather than the bitter roasted barley used in most examples of this new style. The name is derived from Floridaís "Blackwater" rivers, which are dark in tannins from the native oak trees.

Blackwater was created through a collaboration between Head Brewer Craig Birkmaier and Eric Luman, Head Brewer at Jacksonvilleís Green Room brewery. It was judged the Best Beer in Florida at the 2011 Best Florida Beer Competition.

Draft. Review 07.15.11. A: Caramel, tan head that shows hints of creamy white in the middle signaling it is not a typical stout, or at least not one that Iíve seen. Extremely dark body with hints of light brown on the edges while holding up to the light. Carbonation looks spot on, with a quick shake the head retention becomes as thick as desired (common in the heavy molasses tasting brews). S: A hop head would fall over in his chair after a whiff of this beautiful bouquet of hops jumping out of the glass. Heavy citrus hops with hints of grapefruit telling me Iím really going to enjoy this interpretation of an IPA. A lot more going on in the smell but my amateur nose can not decipher the subtle differences. T: WOW! There is some major flavor going on with a couple transitions. Starts off soft, mild with a light alcohol presence that quickly goes away and does not come back. Middle of the taste is an explosion of citrusy hops and low acidic fruit that go easy on your palate. Finishes with hints of chocolate malts that linger without all the bitterness common in stouts. For as much flavor going on, Blackwater is extremely balanced. M: Way too drinkable. Makes me sad this a limited release brew. I could really get use to making this my go-to. From the hop profile, to carbonation, to mild malt backbone, this is an extremely impressive Black IPA that will set standards for the relatively new style. O: Iím glad I moved down to Florida:) Between Swamp Head and Cigar City it seems I have a new favorite every couple months. Blackwater, being an off the way IPA, far surpasses my expectations and Iím looking forward to trying more of their creations.

Tap at GABF 2013. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy off white head. The aroma is weak grassy hop. The flavour is medium to weak bitter with a liqourice bitter dry hop slightly watery palate with the slightest hint of barnyard.

Swamp Head Darkwater Floridian Dark Ale is a decent take on a unique style. Light hoppy aroma but not very complex. Dark pour with a frothy head. Taste is hoppy but not complex with some roasted barley notes. While Darkwater is enjoyable and unique, it is not really a standout as an IPA nor as a black ale.

Tasting at Kevinís. Hoppy nose. LIght body. Not sure if this is trying to be a black IPA since brownish body. Hops dominate any other flavor.

Black pour. Big khaki head that lasts for a good amount of time. Tons of lacing as the carbonation continues to add volume to the head. Huge aroma of danky hops and citrus. It smells like a cup of fresh hops. Piney, resinous, hops. There is some note of chocolate, orange, and malt. A very smooth mouthfeel with a slight bitterness. Taste is a very slight coffee and tons of hops. This is a really great beer.

From the 750ml bottle. Pours black with a thick off white head. Citrus and dark roasted grain aroma. Medium body, caramel malts, citrus hops and light roasted malts in the taste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Gator Beverage. Black/dark brown pour with a nearly one finger tan head, looking pretty creamy. Huge dry pine aroma, some wood, sweet malt, spicy grains. Flavor is up front pine, chocolate, and a dry spicy finish. Medium mouthfeel, lingering spice. Medium carb. Pretty smooth beer and very nice. Relatively easy to drink. Solid beer and now one of my favorites from Swamp Head.

750ml bottle acquired in trade. Poured a dark brown, almost black with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roast, coffee, pine, and floral. Tastes of coffee, roast, pine, some earth, and lighter chocolate.

Thanks to my 2013 Summer Secret Santa for this one! Pours reddish brownish black, with a huge tan head. Spicy, piney aroma, with notes of coffee. Flavor is much more coffee-ish than the aroma suggests, plus some piney flavors mixed in. Some other vague woody notes as it warms. Crisp finish. Really tasty stuff!

Bottle. Pretty much black with a booming tan head that leaves some thick scattered lacing. The aroma is quite hoppy; pine and some citrus, with toasted malt. Smooth drinking initially before the bitter pine hops kick in. A bit roasty, with toasted grains, and earthy hop character. Thereís a splash of citrus but itís buried in amongst the other flavors. The finish is dry and shows lingering charred malty notes. Good beer.
