A dark, hoppy Floridian Dark Ale. This award winning dark ale features a rich smoothness and complex hop profile.

Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale is an American-style Black Ale at the low end of the IPA alcohol range (6.4% ABV), with an abundance of hop flavor and aroma. It represents what we consider to be an improvement on what are being called Black IPAs, or Cascadian Dark Ales, deriving its "darkness" from chocolate wheat malt rather than the bitter roasted barley used in most examples of this new style. The name is derived from Florida’s "Blackwater" rivers, which are dark in tannins from the native oak trees.

Blackwater was created through a collaboration between Head Brewer Craig Birkmaier and Eric Luman, Head Brewer at Jacksonville’s Green Room brewery. It was judged the Best Beer in Florida at the 2011 Best Florida Beer Competition.

Draft at proof. Deep brown, almost black pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is strong pine and grassy hops with some underlying roasted malt notes. Flavor has nice pine, floral, and more grass notes with some roasted malts. Nice bitter finish. Pretty tasty!

Pour is black with lots of tan head. Nose is light roast, hint of marshmallow, citrusy hops. Taste is sweeter, roast is very light, notes of dark malts, a good bit of citrus and notes of candied sugar. Gets a little sweet, strong carb and a light body. Flavors are a bit muted.

Kind of resembles a slightly hoppy porter. A bit like a dulled down Jose Marti, with some coffee notes, a piney hop quality, and a body that’s a bit too thin. Drinkable but not something I’m in a rush to have again.

Bottle from Gator Beverage. Black/dark brown pour with a nearly one finger tan head, looking pretty creamy. Huge dry pine aroma, some wood, sweet malt, spicy grains. Flavor is up front pine, chocolate, and a dry spicy finish. Medium mouthfeel, lingering spice. Medium carb. Pretty smooth beer and very nice. Relatively easy to drink. Solid beer and now one of my favorites from Swamp Head.

UPDATED: JUN 20, 2013 Draft at Swamp Head tasting room. Pours an opaque black color with a thin tan head. Moderate webbed lacing along the glass. Lots of citrus hops in the aroma but a fair amount of roasted malts as well. Nice amount of bitterness in the finish. Quite tasty.

Bottle courtesy of bmmilsey, thanks bro! Pours a near black, thin looking coming out of the bottle with a ginormous tan head. Aromas of roast and topical fruity hops. Taste is similar - roasty, fruity clean tropical hops. Pretty juicy. Finishes with a roast and a hop bite. Only detraction is the ultra-thin mouthfeel. Decent, by any measure.

Pours dark mahogany with a medium sized tan head. Smells strongly of resinous pine. Taste is woody, piney, with hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Swamp Head Darkwater Floridian Dark Ale finishes with a lingering woody dryness.

Alert the presses. Another Black IPA that I didn’t detest. To be fair, if I had known it was a Black IPA I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance. Poured deep, dark brown with light tan head. Scent is chocolate, roasted coffee, and a touch of pine. Flavor starts mildly bitter, has a roasty midsection, and finish barely sweet. Medium-heavy body with appropriate carbonation. On tap at Proof, pours with a slight tan head. Deep malty aroma, has a bit of gritty hoppiness. Slightly malty. Not to shabby, probably my favorite Swamp Head brew.

Black IPA close to a smooth hoppy stout. Malts and sharp piney hops in the nose. The taste has a roasted and smoky flavor which work well with the grassy hops. Light bodied. Good.
