3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle courtesy of bmmilsey, thanks bro! Pours a near black, thin looking coming out of the bottle with a ginormous tan head. Aromas of roast and topical fruity hops. Taste is similar - roasty, fruity clean tropical hops. Pretty juicy. Finishes with a roast and a hop bite. Only detraction is the ultra-thin mouthfeel. Decent, by any measure.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Gator Beverage. Black/dark brown pour with a nearly one finger tan head, looking pretty creamy. Huge dry pine aroma, some wood, sweet malt, spicy grains. Flavor is up front pine, chocolate, and a dry spicy finish. Medium mouthfeel, lingering spice. Medium carb. Pretty smooth beer and very nice. Relatively easy to drink. Solid beer and now one of my favorites from Swamp Head.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Proof, pours with a slight tan head. Deep malty aroma, has a bit of gritty hoppiness. Slightly malty. Not to shabby, probably my favorite Swamp Head brew.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Alert the presses. Another Black IPA that I didn’t detest. To be fair, if I had known it was a Black IPA I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance. Poured deep, dark brown with light tan head. Scent is chocolate, roasted coffee, and a touch of pine. Flavor starts mildly bitter, has a roasty midsection, and finish barely sweet. Medium-heavy body with appropriate carbonation. 3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Black IPA close to a smooth hoppy stout. Malts and sharp piney hops in the nose. The taste has a roasted and smoky flavor which work well with the grassy hops. Light bodied. Good.

Draft at Swamp Head Tap Takeover at CCB. Pours dark brown with a red tint and a small beige head. Aroma is roast, piney hops, citrus, and raisins. Flavor is mostly ipa-ish. Pine hops, citrus hops, and grass. Medium body. Pretty good beer.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Swamp Head Darkwater Floridian Dark Ale is a decent take on a unique style. Light hoppy aroma but not very complex. Dark pour with a frothy head. Taste is hoppy but not complex with some roasted barley notes. While Darkwater is enjoyable and unique, it is not really a standout as an IPA nor as a black ale.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Great brew out of the terrible swamp, drank a lot of it at Green Room in Jax Beach. If you can get this then do it!

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Half pint, on-tap. Nice dark color that has typical aroma qualities of toasted malts and nice citrus hop profile. The body of this beer is thin and light and has a slightly sweet and light hoppy finish. The malts really do round out this beer nicely. I would have another one.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft. Review 07.15.11.
A: Caramel, tan head that shows hints of creamy white in the middle signaling it is not a typical stout, or at least not one that I’ve seen. Extremely dark body with hints of light brown on the edges while holding up to the light. Carbonation looks spot on, with a quick shake the head retention becomes as thick as desired (common in the heavy molasses tasting brews).
S: A hop head would fall over in his chair after a whiff of this beautiful bouquet of hops jumping out of the glass. Heavy citrus hops with hints of grapefruit telling me I’m really going to enjoy this interpretation of an IPA. A lot more going on in the smell but my amateur nose can not decipher the subtle differences.
T: WOW! There is some major flavor going on with a couple transitions. Starts off soft, mild with a light alcohol presence that quickly goes away and does not come back. Middle of the taste is an explosion of citrusy hops and low acidic fruit that go easy on your palate. Finishes with hints of chocolate malts that linger without all the bitterness common in stouts. For as much flavor going on, Blackwater is extremely balanced.
M: Way too drinkable. Makes me sad this a limited release brew. I could really get use to making this my go-to. From the hop profile, to carbonation, to mild malt backbone, this is an extremely impressive Black IPA that will set standards for the relatively new style.
O: I’m glad I moved down to Florida:) Between Swamp Head and Cigar City it seems I have a new favorite every couple months. Blackwater, being an off the way IPA, far surpasses my expectations and I’m looking forward to trying more of their creations.
