COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark, hoppy Floridian Dark Ale. This award winning dark ale features a rich smoothness and complex hop profile.

Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale is an American-style Black Ale at the low end of the IPA alcohol range (6.4% ABV), with an abundance of hop flavor and aroma. It represents what we consider to be an improvement on what are being called Black IPAs, or Cascadian Dark Ales, deriving its "darkness" from chocolate wheat malt rather than the bitter roasted barley used in most examples of this new style. The name is derived from Florida’s "Blackwater" rivers, which are dark in tannins from the native oak trees.

Blackwater was created through a collaboration between Head Brewer Craig Birkmaier and Eric Luman, Head Brewer at Jacksonville’s Green Room brewery. It was judged the Best Beer in Florida at the 2011 Best Florida Beer Competition.

On tap at Proof, pours with a slight tan head. Deep malty aroma, has a bit of gritty hoppiness. Slightly malty. Not to shabby, probably my favorite Swamp Head brew.

Draft at Swamp Head Tap Takeover at CCB. Pours dark brown with a red tint and a small beige head. Aroma is roast, piney hops, citrus, and raisins. Flavor is mostly ipa-ish. Pine hops, citrus hops, and grass. Medium body. Pretty good beer.

Dark black in color, clear with a thin tan head. Nice Dark ale aroma and light finish. I was impressed with the aroma more than the flavor. This was a decent dark ale attempt.

Tap at GABF 2013. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy off white head. The aroma is weak grassy hop. The flavour is medium to weak bitter with a liqourice bitter dry hop slightly watery palate with the slightest hint of barnyard.

Alert the presses. Another Black IPA that I didn’t detest. To be fair, if I had known it was a Black IPA I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance. Poured deep, dark brown with light tan head. Scent is chocolate, roasted coffee, and a touch of pine. Flavor starts mildly bitter, has a roasty midsection, and finish barely sweet. Medium-heavy body with appropriate carbonation. Bottle - Grassroots Natural Market - Jacksonville, FL

Pours dark brown, almost black with a big mocha head. Aroma big on malt and chocolate not on hops. Taste is bitter, dark chocolate, caramel malt. Bitter hops are present but not overpowering. Really nice, somewhat balanced but in a good way

Aroma has notes of vanilla, spice, and earthy tones w/ slight hint of chocolate. Pours dark brown. A malty slightly sweet at the beginning finishes a little bitter. Flavors of chocolate, kindda creamy, and dark roasted coffee.

Bottle, courtesy Bud, thanks! Pours black with a tan head. Some retention/lace. Aroma of wheat, chocolate, light citrus, earth, vanilla. Taste is lightly bitter, big wheat, chocolate, earthy, quite sweet. Palate is soft, creamy, sweeter finish. Came off as weizenbock more than Black IPA to me.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a near clear dark brown with a fluffy tan head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a bit of earthy dark grains with some light fruits, a bit of pine and some chocolate backing. Flavor has a combination of earthy dark grains and pine with a bit of light fruit underlying.

3/18/11. On tap. Mild roasted aroma with big citrusy catpee hops. Bigger roasted coffee and chocolate flavor again lingering with citrus hops. If not for the watery body and somewhat watery flavor, this wouldn’t be half bad.
