4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap. Big black pour with a small khaki head. Fair amount of lacing. Heavy coffee aroma with some chocolate and malts. Flavor follows - much less sweet than a lot of oatmeals, just nicely bitter black coffee and a little hint of molasses in the back. Only complaint is that it’s pretty thin for a stout with "oil" in the title. Very good though.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap. Heavy malt notes of toasted cereal and strong coffee, light resin and dough for the hops and yeast, with a big dose of charcoal on the back end. Head is small, wispy, light brown with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very murky dark brown. Flavor starts lightly to moderately acidic and moderately bitter, then finishes moderately acidic and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a lively carbonation and a pretty dry finish This Stout smell pretty nice, there’s just not a lot of complexity in the flavor.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 22, 2013 On tap at Satchel’s in Gainesville. Poured in a plastic cup...oh well.
I tend to like roasty stouts a bit more than syrupy and sweet and this one hit it on the nose. Very strong roasted coffee aroma. More carbonated than other stouts. Mild sweetness balances with the roasted coffee. Goes down easy, which is expected given the 5% alcohol.
A great stout in cold or warm weather. I’m beginning to really like Swamp Head, and will have to make a visit there soon.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
Nice balance of coffee, oatmeal and chocolately flavors. Texture is rich and syrupy. Color is the expected black. Midnight Oil is one nice stout.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma is full of coffee, but feels incomplete. Appearance is a bit oily (not a pun) but a nice dark with a small copper lacing head. Taste is a bit stale, but honestly more realistically coffee than other coffee stouts. The nice thick carbonation balances the bitter.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On draught at Cigar City. Pours black with a medium frothy beige head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and hops. Light to medium body with a roasty character and notes of chocolate malt and mild hops. The finish is short with a roasted malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Growler shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt!
The beer is dark brown with a thin, tan head that leaves a fair amount of lacing behind. The aroma brings a light dose of roast and coffee. The flavor is decent, but lacks character and assertiveness. The feel is relatively thin, though this is but a 5% ABV stout. Overall, I wish the beer brought more coffee and roast character, both in the aroma and flavor profile. Worth a try.
