Midnight Oil is an Oatmeal Coffee Stout. "Quiet and sensual like a moonlit night, this complex blend of toasted oats, roasted barley, chocolate wheat malt, and dark roast organic coffee, imparts an intense aroma and complex flavor profile. Midnight Oil will wake up your senses. We brew a traditional English oatmeal stout with a rich malt profile, then add locally roasted organic fair trade coffee while this ale is cold conditioned. Cold extraction imparts an intense coffee aroma and flavor without the bitter oils using heat processing techniques

on tap @ Swamp Head / Gainesville FL --- Opaque black with a thick brown rim head, lots of lace streaks. Good aroma of edgy malt. Taste is strong toasted malt that becomes a little bitter in the palate. The finish retains the malt, but becomes a little chalky and dry on the roof of the mouth. Otherwise, a solid brew.

On tap at the 2010 installment of Stogies and Stouts pouring deep dark with ruby edges and thin tan head. The aroma is kind of roasty to burnt with malt sweetness and a light level of black strap molasses around the edges. The taste brings up malt sweetness, dark roasted malts and a bit of burnt malts that heads into sort of an ashy sense by midway. The sweetness and the fairly thin body maintain all the way through into the finish picking up a sense of earthiness as well.

Draft. Black pour, thin light tan head. Moderate coffee aroma, mild roast in back. Light body. More coffee on taste than roast. Kind of on the lighter side.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a nice smooth chocolate with light burned wood, some fusel alcohol, really nice. In mouth, a light and smooth chocolate with light peated notes, not bad but overall, a bit light. On tap at Dunedin House of Beer, May 23 2010.

Draft. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is great: chocolate, lots of coffee, roasted malts. Flavor is coffee and light hop bitterness; somewhat watery and closer to drip coffee than coffee stout.

Ok, this is a sweeter stout thatís got a decent roastiness, some slight semblance of coffee I suppose. Itís decent, but not really all that coffee-like.

pours a pitch black color, ruby notes. earthy brown soil colored head. robust malts, rich and roasted. hints of toffee and very light faint chocolate. lots of coffee notes . carbonation is a little off but could be bar error.

Growler courtesy of drabmuh. Served in a fancy new Swamp Head pint glass (the one with the green print), also courtesy of drabmuh. Pours a very dark black color with a nice mocha head. Sticks around for a bit and leaves some slight lacing. The nose brings some really strong notes of coffee. Really nice aroma off of a high quality bean. A bit of roast in the background. The flavor swaps things up, with the roast being more prominent and the coffee character fading to the background. Light chocolate there as well. The body is a bit too thin--Iíd like something with some more body to bring forward that creamy texture thatís always nice in coffee beers. However, the roasty finish is nice. A very nice brew. Would enjoy trying more from them. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 05-11-2011
