mansquito (3416) - Nueva York, New York, USA - JUN 27, 2014
New Beer Distributors, NYC 11.2 ounce ($8.25): Pours a murky brown with a off-white head. Aroma is full of sweet malts, some light hops, hints of booze, and some earthiness. Taste is slightly sweet, very malty, and somewhat alcohol. Not a bad barley wine.

Tap at the brewery restaurant. 1 year old, aged in the keg. Clear amber-orange with a touch of lace. Fruity, estery nose, caramel, oranges, apricots, light oxidation from age. Very fruity flavors, raisins, some toffee, hop bitterness and citrus flavors remain though mellow and muted, alcohol well hidden. Very smooth and mellow. Quite enjoyable. Definitely helped by the aging.

Bottle at a barley wine tasting. Pours a hazy amber color. Nose is filled with some caramel notes and seems malty sweet. Taste is also slightly sweet, with just a bit of booziness to it. Better than I thought it would be.

Cybercat (3342) - Georgia, USA - JAN 19, 2014
Pours a nice clear chestnut with a fairly thick and frothy buff head. Strong aroma has a malty core and notes of caramel, sweet fruit and clove. Flavor is strong but doesn’t hide the alcohol bite that lets you know this is a badass high-grav beer. Sweet malt and caramel dominate, but let snips of clove and apple through. Texture is fairly firm, fairly fizzy, leaving a sweet yet edgy alcohol finish. Gotta love the Japanese - they make great beer, better cars. (And yet, after donating my ancient Honda Accord to charity, I bought a new FORD!)

firemarshal (160) - North Carolina, USA - DEC 22, 2013
Bottle into snifter. Opaque, thick looking dark orange color. Sweet aroma, alcohol, licorice, herbal. Super sweet taste upfront, medicinal in the middle, bitter, even astringent finish. Medium bodied, smooth overall palate. This is a sipper for sure, best on a cold night after dinner in front of the fire.

jbeatty (1026) - New York, USA - AUG 14, 2013
Bottle from New Beer Distributors, 08/14/2013. Pours bright burnt copper, clear, thin head dies to haze on the surface, large-bubbled lacing. Aroma is toasted vanilla caramel chew candy, apple, citrus and resinous sweet hop character. Taste is rich caramel with toasted grain syrup, piney hop bitterness with tangerine essence lingering. Thick body. Decent, definitely lots of flavor and satisfying though not overly complex.

Draught at Swan Lake Pub Edo. Clear red/brown - white head. Barley. Raisins. Ryebread. Light boozy notes. Butter bisquit. Citrus. Rather bitter hoppy. Nice.

Bottle purchased at Uwajimaya in Seattle. Clear amber orange with a creamy, lacy off-white head. Mostly caramel and fruit in the aroma, with a bit of C-hops. Very sweet, medium-full body, minimal carbonation.

Fortunately, the hoppy-ness is on the American side of the barleywine scale rather than the English, or this would be a sugar-bomb disaster. Definitely appeals to the sweet tooth. With this much residual sugar and 10%ABV, I wonder what the OG was. It had to be a beast.
