A collaboration sour ale between Vintage and Sweet Mullets Breweries. What would medieval ale have tasted like? The off kilter brewmasters from Sweet Mullets and Vintage pondered this very question while conjuring this strange, wild and ancient Gruit. Spiced with heather tips and mugwart brewed with peat smoked malt, and wild fermented for a pleasing tartness... Unless your name’s Beowulf, you’ve not tasted an ale like this!

Sampler at Vintage. Really good beer. Aroma didn’t strike me as particularly outstanding - sour, a little yeasty. The flavor is great though. Reminds me quite a bit of Kambucha - it strikes a very nice balance between sweet and sour with a bit of added complexity from the spice additions. Apparently the middle ages were a good time to be a beer drinker.

Tap at Sweet Mullets. Unfiltered brown-burgundy. No real lasting head, some thin, oily residue. Intense pineapple-ginger sourness. Very juicy, fruity, vinous. Leaning quite into the sour yeast, this is a really enjoyable Gruit. Funky alcohol tinged tropical pineapple. Quite unique, pretty good, but not really on par with World Class sours.

February 23, 2013 from Bob’s growler. Tons of caraway and lots of vegetable in the flavor, which I assume is the peat and heather, also giving it some grassy character. Yeast and grain and moderate sourness. Good. thanks Bob. I am always up for trying something new with beer, and this one works out well.

Hazy dark amber/caramel. Small beige head. Fruity, earthy, sugary, sweet, spicey, sour, tart. ’weedy’ . Super interesting on the palate. Absolutely worth a try

Hazy amber pour, very murky on this one. Had a strong vinegar aroma with some anise, clove, tart fruit, lemon, and some odd herbal qualities. Overripe tropical fruit flavors going on in this one, some pine. Finishes tart, minimal carbonation. Not really my thing.

Growler shared by Bob at the Bobstravaganza! This is fantastic, not only highly unusual, but really nice! Spices sweet nose. There is a tart, very slightly vinegar in the middle, evens out and finishes a bit sweet. Think about salt and vinegar chips when tasting this beer - I liked it!

February 23, 2013 growler shared by Bob. Orangish brown pour with limited head. Fruity, caramel, earthy, spice and bit of sour in aroma. Taste was similar and finished with a balanced sourness.

Growler shared by Bob - thanks! Wow, this is awesome. Cardamom, floral, bright tart fruit, and quite sweet on the taste. Really good stuff!

A hazed amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, weird grassy honey with camphor and sulfur, so-so. In mouth, sweet lemony sour ale with licorice, cardamom and incense, strange. On tap at Istmus Beer and Cheese Fest, Jan 19 2012.

Courtesy of Skyview. Dark orange color with a small head. Aroma of sour honey and apples. Quite an herbal flavor, rosemary in particular. Orange and light to moderate tartness. I have to say I enjoyed a lightly soured gruit.

On draught at the Sweet Mullets brewery taproom just outside of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Pours a hazy amber colored brew with a thick off-white head that has some excellent retention and thick lacing. Aroma of clove, mugwart, yeast, some tart apple, tart hard fruits, light spruce tips and a touch of earthy herbs. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of tart tropical fruits, a touch of apple cider, smoked caramel malt and some spicy yeast. Finish continues the tart fruit and mugwart (absinthe) aftertaste with even some hints of pine apple and mango presence. Though mugwart is related to wormwood, no strange hallucinations, but the tart profile makes this quite rememberable.
