SweetWater’s Sweet 16 Tribute: a Red Wheat Wine Ale Of course, SweetWater couldn’t throw a birthday bash without an honorary brew to celebrate such an occasion. The brewers went out of the box with this super heady limited-run Dank Tank release. With a license to brew, they stepped on the gas and whipped out a racy Red Wheat Wine (say that five times fast). This beer rips down the road at 11% ABV, fueled by a 45% wheat bomb and an after-burner hop shot of Amarillo, Willamette, Nelson Sauvin, and US Goldings creating a brew that is sure to raise some hairs.

Very nice deep copper color on this pour, with a gently formed, but durable head that was two fingers thick. The back label of the bottle was filled with helpful information about the contents, rather than the typical double entendre filled nonsense seen on Sweetwater Dank Tank series. The smell was underwhelming at first whiff, but revealed some candied apple like layering upon closer inspection. The taste was unusual for a whetwine, as there wasn’t much of a banana or orange phenols here. Instead it tasted more like a Belgian Quadrupel, with sweet cherries, plums, and other dark fruits. Unlike a Quad, there was bitter hop finish, and the alcohol burn hit shortly after than. This beer could definitely benefit from more age induced mellowing. The mouthfeel was little thin to me, but that may be due to the dry mouth sensation created by the hops. Not really true to style at all, but interesting.

Brown pour with off white head and lace. Aroma is dried fruit and an under tone of resiny hops. Flavor is sweet malt, dried fruit, and a solid bitter for the age. A touch of brown sugar in their along with a nice warmth. Medium body with good carbonation. complex and tasty

Bottle. Pour a dark amber with large creamy off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong wheat, roast, burnt toast. Thin mouth, very boozy, candy sugar, caramel, toffee, sweet finish, good.

Pours thick syrupy reddish amber with a small partial ring of beige. Aroma and flavor bring smooth sweet caramel candy apple but not cutting or resiny, really smooth after a few years in the cellar. The creamy caramel bar flavor sits so well on the palate.

Got this courtesy of my summer Secret Santa. Thanks. Decent beer. Awesome aroma rich and thick with caramel filling the nose. Almost like a hot candy apple minus the apple. Pour was a hazy burnt red with a thin tan film for a head. Taste was very subdued. Not the big malt bomb the aroma was suggesting. There is strong malt flavor with a weird spiciness that came out as it warmed. Tartness came out on the sides of the tongue in the finish. Tastes like a 7-8% beer so hides alcohol well. Mild carbonation

"Oddly spicily hopped and malted...lots going on, some working together, some solo, some flavors seemingly pitted againts each other, but what you end with works. Not a lot to compare this too, even in the style. The only real flaw is the abv shows a bit, but it was definitely enjoyed."

Shared a bottle with friends in a Walt tribute Dec 11, 2013. Pours brown-amber with head and lace. Aroma of caramel and wort. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of wort, sweet malts, powder sugar, bitter chocolate, bitter fruit rind, minerals. Overall big, bold with some cloying sweet notes and bitterness.

22oz bottle pours a syrupy, translucent caramel amber with some lacing, white head. Nose is very boozy, brandy, some fortified red wine, a little grappa, some grape preserves, malt, caramel. Flavor is a little better, certainly more balanced, malt, a little wood pulp, orange, a little bananas foster, brown sugar, caramel, a bit of clove, a little bit of jam. Fairly smooth finish for 11% abv. My guess is, this beer is peaking now.

Dark, ruddy brown pour. All malt in the nose with some caramel, dried banana, and fig. Certainly on the sweet side flavor wise. Banana bread with caramel sauce and only a slight bitterness to balance things out. Warming finish. Not bad, definitely a dessert brew.

Had this after its been aged for a year, I thin the beer would have been better a year ago. The beer now taste like a malt bomb loads of caramel and sweetness up front. There isnt much depth but the beer is not very heavy and pretty drinkable, could easily finish the bomber

650ml bottle. This is a pretty god one here, definite hop character to combatthe large sweetness.
