For the first ever SweetWater anniversary beer (yeah it took us 15 years), we went back to our roots, dusted off our original ESB recipe, and gave it a big ol’ bump. The recipe consists of 7 malts, one of which Kevin toasted personally in his toaster oven, just like the old days, and 5 different styles of hops. In true Sweetwater style, there is no style, but it’s big, bold, and meant to grow old, meaning this beer will be fantastic out of the gate, or you can lay her down in the cellar for many years to come.

Bomber from Bruisin Ales. Pours dark copper with a frothy beige head. Sort of mixed funky fruit/floral aroma. Not earthy - just funky. Full bodied. Flavor is light pitted yellow fruits, heather, earth, dark pitted fruits (this stuff keeps moving around, flavorwise). It’s a bit leathery. Definitely, tho subtly floral. Smooth roasted malt - not at all harsh. Heat is hardly noticeable. The bitter keeps fighting off the malt. It is "fresh". It is old. Brilliant ale. Really. Our cousins over the pond might die consuming this, but they’d likely die happy.

Bomber courtesy of CraftBeerDesign (thanks Geoff) poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of earthiness, toasted malt and citrus. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of toasted malt, earthiness, cocoa and fruittiness with a smooth dry lingering earthy finish.

2/19/12. 22oz bottle. Slightly hazed reddish brown pour with a small khaki head that fades to a sloppy ring and barely laces at all. Slightly sweet aroma with caramel, grassy hops, a bit of minerally dryness, and more sweetness. Slightly sweet caramel flavor with a bit of tartness and more dry minerals with lingering papery sweetness and cloying sweetness. Meh.

Tallahassee, Fl - Momo’s Pizza - on tap. Dark orange pour with nice bubble action, off-white sticky head that leaves a brief coat of lacing. Aroma has some maple syrup accents, a hint of brown sugar. Flavor has some bourbon-like booziness, some candied sugar, maple syrup, a touch of citrus and a back end of cinnamon. Finish turns a bit boozy as it warms up. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. A pint of this was enough!

So, I had this in a bar and didn’t bother to rate it because I knew I had a bottle at home and I could rate it anytime I wanted. But after trying it, I was kinda...I don’t want to say "dreading", but I wasn’t really looking forward to having it again. It’s flavorful, but very heavy. And sweet. Alot of caramel, molasses, honey, vanilla, bourbon. Only lightly bitter. Ok, I suppose, but not really my thing.

Brown pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is light brown sugar, caramel malt, and a light resin. Flavor mirrors aroma with a good resiny bitter. Medium bodied with good carbonation.
