Alone and cold on a frigid fall night, the evil Dr. Dank’s stomach rumbled. It has been days since devouring the last of this trannies and platypuseses. Desperate, he wanderered into his kitchen only to find a 3-eyed rat, yellow toenails, and an old bean burrito. Always resourceful, Dr. Dank remembered his great, great, bouffalata, granny goose’s Ghoulash recipe.
Try as he might, he couldn’t get it right, so he dumped everything he could find from the fridge and cupboard into one giant boiling brew, resulting in this stew of 2-row, black wheat, munich malt and a 14-hop variety asplifidation of Willamette, Galena, Mt. Hood, Nugget, Perle, Aroma, Bobek, Aurora, Styrian, Golding, Magnum, Columbus, Summit, Millennium, and Crystal. Sloppy seconds never tasted so ghood!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours an opaque black-brown on tap with bubbly brown head that dissipates and leaves good lacing. Aroma of hops, floral and piney, and roasted malt underneath. Taste is a slightly bitter hop menagerie with a thin malty backbone and an oddly dry finish. Decent, crazy, but there are better black IPAs out there.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
What a great beer. It has a dark black color with a medium-brown colored head. Its aroma is so great… even from a foot away. It smells like a barley wine, strong, hoppy and sweet… simply gorgeous. Its mouth feel is easy, almost syrupy at times, with hops and alcohol dominating. Its roasted character only shows in the finish and doesn’t muddle up the tastiness of the beer. This is an awesome, delightful beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Gift from my friend Noel. Black pour with a dense, mocha colored head. Roasted malt, tropical fruit, citrus notes, soft pine, chocolate and floral hops in the aroma. Taste is big roasted malt, tropical fruit notes, light pine, herbal notes and chocolate. Light coffee in the background as well. Body is medium-full and chewy with dense, creamy carbonation and a soft, resinous feel. Moderate lingering hop bitterness. Ends with more roasted malt, citrus notes, floral hops, herbal notes, thinned chocolate, tropical fruit notes and light pine. There’s almost a chocolate mint note as well.

4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark chocolaty head sits atop a deep black brew with so many flavors it explodes on the tongue. I found this bottle in a shop in June ’12. Deep flavors of chocolate and smooth high gravity. Wonderful showing.

Originally reviewed: 10/29/11. Stopped by City Bev for some Sprecher Oktoberfest, and saw they had this new one on tap. Yes, please!
Served in a Duvel chalice. Deep dark pour with a thick finger-width head of ivory foam. Retained well, and left spotty lace behind. Big hoppy nose right away, but the more I sip this one, the more roasted it becomes. Good hefty body supports the ABV well. Carbonation presence moderate. A nice bittering piney flavor starts this one out, but it is well balanced by a semi-sweet roasted chocolate flavor. The finish is smooth with hints of baker’s chocolate. Just enough hops on the back end to keep me pleased. Very nice beer. Excellent representation of the style.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft. Pours very dark with a smallish light tan head. Aroma is hoppy and all over the map -- citrus, pine, floral, and a whole lot of, well, earthy dankness. Also a bit of chocolate and caramel. Flavor is all that and -- damn -- dank. Very earthy. Bitter, but very flavorful. Medium, slightly thick mouthfeel.
