COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The biggest farm animal to come out of the SweetWater Barn! We bucked up and threw everything, including the kitchen sink, into this "Jackass" concoction. At 10% ABV and over 90 IBU - You’ll know it when it hits you in the back of the head!

One-liter foil-clad swing-top bottle. Poured a very deep red/amber with little head (what little bubbles did rise were tan in color). The aroma was interesting - it was very sweet and malty (quite in style for a barley wine), but there was an interesting hoppiness and earthiness as well. The aroma also had a very subtle touch of smokiness. The taste was very sweet and malty, but a strong hop flavor was present. The hops tasted a little grassy, but mostly earthy and flowery - perhaps a touch of pine, too. On the tip of the tongue, the combination was quite complex. By mid-tongue, it was a very palatable blend of sweet and bitter (leaning more towards sweet). The finish was full bodied, but still hoppy. The burps afterward taste just like the beer did: very malty with flowery hops. The mouthfeel was thick, but had sufficient carbonation to not make it feel syrupy. Overall, it was a very nice barley wine. The hops provided just the right balance to prevent the massive malts from being cloying. I would have a hard time believing this beer is 90 IBU considering the strength (10%) and how accented the flavor is towards malt. But the labeling aside, it was very pleasant.

(1L Bottle) Pours a hazy amber body with a medium-sized beige head. Aroma of cherry, caramel, and grapefruit. Flavor of citrusy hops, caramel malt, toffee, and light pine with a dry, bitter finish.

Seemed much more like a double IPA in my book, so rating reflects that. On draft at Great Decatur Beer Festival, although it was unmarked. Pours a brownish yellow, thick clear head on a 5oz pour. Massive smack of fruity resiny hops: tangerine, pineapple, bubblegum, quite a punch indeed. Very sweet on the palate, backed by a pretty decent bittering and a smooth rich palate. If you like them wild and untamed, you should probably try it out. I’ll leave my 1L alone for a year or two; should help even things out a bit.

1L bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a murky, orange-brown color; off-white head with patchy lacing. Fruit punch and earthy hops in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: fruit punch and muddled malt and hop notes (christ, I loved the word "muddle" on Friday); decent chewiness, filling, but not exceptional or focused; a bit of a mess. Lengthy, fruit punch and sugar in the finish. Adolescent name.

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2008 Poured from a one liter. Reddish bronze hue and almost opaque. Predictable, pleasant aroma of oranges and toffee; hints of pineapple, and peat. Dark and sweet taste of brown sugar rubbed into mango, more toffee, and dark, tannic, syrupy wine. Citrus expands slowly and settles in even with warmth; it carries its bright hoppiness with relative ease and some brash resinous bite. Thick, but reticent in the mouth with soft warmth. Quite nice, and reasonably understated example in its typically brash americanized field. Thanks for sharing, Ryan!

1L bottle from TheBeerCellar. Thanks! Pours chill hazy medium coppery with 1-finger off-white head that stays arounbd a while, reappears at every repour, and forms nice lacing for a beer this strong. The aroma is huge hops, some hot wafts, and some tropical fruity notes, plus caramel malt. No noticeable heat until the very end, with flavors of heavy hops, tangerine, mango peppery, and malt notes. Indeed, this one is much more of an IIPA than barleywine, but it is great however you choose to pigeonhole it.

Big ass bottle from beerceller, Thanks! Pretty semi hazy amber color with nice sized off white head. Hoppy aroma with light malty notes. The taste was malty, hoppy, with somewhat sweet notes throughout. Good beer, but how is this a barleywine?? Basicly a good IIPA. Maybe it will turn into a barleywine, good thing I have one to lay down. Thanks, Matt.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet hoppy combined with notes of grapefruit, while the flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of hops, alcohol, and grapefruit. The alcohol carries all the way to the finish.
