Seriously? I get to rate this first? WooHoo! Iím awesome! Huzzah for me! Anyway, this made a surprise appearance the 2007 Asheville Brewgrass. I accidentally cut line to score some of this, so I guess I burned a lot of Karma getting this. Itís caramel colored, with a big beige head. Huge aroma, with plenty of sweet caramel aromas and plenty of huge hop aromas. Lots of sweet flavors at first, like toffee and some fruity apple-y notes. Then it melds seemlessly into a huge piney, sticky hop finish. Seems a little raw, but not in a negative way. Good now, and i would love to let one sit for a year or so.

I saw Suttree and he was the one to inform me of it, Thanks for that! pours a clear copper with mild white head, sweet hoppy aroma, sweet malty finish. mild aftertaste, good, light and hoppy, what a good sessionalbe Barley wine.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2007 Sampled at the 2007 BrewGrass Festival. I canít believe how they keep getting away with all these names. Funny stuff. Pours amber and clear with a light white head. The aroma is just DANK hops with a light sweetness in the background. I mean really. Itís just like smelling a fresh bag of hops. Lightly sweet flavor with caramel infused with pine. Alcohol lingers in the finish. Full sticky mouth feel. While I liked this, it did not seem to have a lot of complexity. Perhaps that will come with some age.

The mammoth one liter bottle of this beer was imposing. Unlike Festive Ale liter bottles, the swing top on this beer was not dipped in red wax, instead a simple gold foil made accessing the beer a much easier proposition. I chose a Duvel tulip glass for the pour, and in it, the beer looked pale orange amber in color, with a two finger thick beige head. The looks were lighter and more lively than a typical barleywine (even an American one), so the reports of this being really a DIPA came to mind even before the first sniff. The smell also made me wonder if a barleywine was really in the glass, as the pine, grapefruit, and hay smells indicated mostly a lot of hops. The taste revealed a beautifully put together creation with hops, hops, and more hops. Salty, piney, spicy, floral, and citric hops were everywhere. As delicious as it was, the weakly flavored and fully attenuated dry malt profile made this quite a bit off the mark for a barleywine. It was not straddling the line between these closely related styles, it was just fully in a DIPA camp. The alcohol was very well hidden, making this liter of 10% brew temptingly easy to drink, and sneakily dangerous. I liked it a lot, but it was not what I expected it to be.

Liter bottle, big thanks to SpringsLicker! This beer has an awesome name. Pours a very bright, full red with a firm tan head and slick lacing in the snifter. Big juicy hop character is found the aroma in the way of a clean, defined PNW assualt. I wouldnít guess barleywine by taking a sniff. Itís all about the hops with rich grapefruit, pine, muscadines, and just a bit of caramel sweetness. The flavor has more indications towards the barleywine category with a chewy sweetness similar to raisins and toffee and a buried earthy flavor, but itís still very, very hoppy. It works so well on this one, itís quite a harmonious execution. Basically itís a IIPA but with some malty English flavors going on. I thoroughly enjoyed the product and the awesome name.

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2008 Bottle from ratebeer Atlanta gang (probably beeryum) tasted at Pizza Port Strong Ale festival. Nice hoppy aroma. amber color. Small bubble head. Delicious hoppy taste. In the same style as double bastard, a hoppy barley wine. I really love beers in this category. Yet another case, where I rate beers much higher than others. 9,4,9,4,18:4.4 Rerate: Tried again from a bottle received in a trade from Captaincougar on 10/28/08. 6 months old. The hops have faded, and the beer has lost itís greatness in my mind. Best drunk fresh. IMHO. 8,3,8,4,17:4.0

Appearance: Pours an opaque, mahogany-hued body with a frothy, creamy, whitish head with plenty of staying power. Smell: Sweetish, citrusy nose of grapefruit backed by an aroma of caramel and pale malts with a small whiff of good, clean alcohol. Taste: Initially sweet, with tastes of pale and caramel malts. Light herbal hints quickly followed by a large dose of juicy Red Blush grapefruit and orange fruitiness complete with a touch of citric acidity. Sure, the hop bitterness certainly remains, but itís much, much more manageable now. Drying, bittersweet finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-high carbonation. Drinkability: When initially released in August of 2007, this one was more akin to a Double IPA than a barleywine, but time has shifted the scales back towards barleywine. Personally, I feel it could stand a bit more time away in the cellar. Shame on Sweetwater for failing to re-brew this one since itís 2007 inception, instead opting to give us more Road Trip.

I called in reenforcements for this guy. 1L. American style Barleywine here. Poured gold with a white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, caramel, and booze. Lots of citrus up front with a sweet candy finish. Excellent.
