Commercial Description:
The biggest farm animal to come out of the SweetWater Barn! We bucked up and threw everything, including the kitchen sink, into this "Jackass" concoction. At 10% ABV and over 90 IBU - You’ll know it when it hits you in the back of the head!

One-liter foil-clad swing-top bottle. Poured a very deep red/amber with little head (what little bubbles did rise were tan in color). The aroma was interesting - it was very sweet and malty (quite in style for a barley wine), but there was an interesting hoppiness and earthiness as well. The aroma also had a very subtle touch of smokiness. The taste was very sweet and malty, but a strong hop flavor was present. The hops tasted a little grassy, but mostly earthy and flowery - perhaps a touch of pine, too. On the tip of the tongue, the combination was quite complex. By mid-tongue, it was a very palatable blend of sweet and bitter (leaning more towards sweet). The finish was full bodied, but still hoppy. The burps afterward taste just like the beer did: very malty with flowery hops. The mouthfeel was thick, but had sufficient carbonation to not make it feel syrupy. Overall, it was a very nice barley wine. The hops provided just the right balance to prevent the massive malts from being cloying. I would have a hard time believing this beer is 90 IBU considering the strength (10%) and how accented the flavor is towards malt. But the labeling aside, it was very pleasant.

22 oz. bottle same as the Dank Tank #4 bottle as well. Appearance: Pours a light, cloudy auburn with a pinstripe of white foam at the top. Leaves spotty lacing. Aroma: Citrus fruit, rind and oil, pear, peach, and sugary malt. Also a little bit of pine. Taste: Orange, grapefruit, peach, mango, brown sugar, and caramel. Finishes with grapefruit and bitterness. Mouthfeel: Syrupy, juicy, and sticky. Overall: Scary good. 10% + abv, with fruity, candy like aroma and taste.

22 oz. Bottle is the same as the Dank Tank #4 picture. I wish they offered this new bottle in 1L, but this year we only are able to get the 22 oz. Picked up at Greens on Ponce De Leon. Nice copper/reddish/orange appearance. Very little head. Nice looking barley wine. Huge citrus aroma. Very unexpected aroma. Slight sweet malt aroma. Huge/pungent aroma! This thing is easy to smell. This tastes more like an imperial/double IPA. Very sweet citrus taste. A nice taste. The sweet malt taste makes this in my mind makes it a barley wine. A sublte bitter flavor. For as many IBUs as this has it is not as bitter as I thought it would be. Creamy beer; glad to have finally tried.

2007, 1L bottle. This has survived 3 tastings unopened... but the title really sums up my week (figuratively), so I’m going to drink it myself. Poured healthy medium orange with an easily-resuscitated cap of yellowy-beige head. The aroma was a bouquet of sweetness, showcasing aged caramel, brown sugar, and redder fruits.. hops were muted, but gave some dry floral and earthy character.. sweetness masked the boozage nicely. The flavor had a similar malt bill that was sweet throughout.. brown sugar led the caramel by a bit and the fruit was much less pronounced.. bitterness was light with pine and citrus leading.. picked up a hit of molasses along with residual caramelly sugars and not-too-specific bitterness on the finish. Heavier-bodied with a choppy flow across the palate (perhaps due to age).. grainy and a little warm.. overall a very enjoyable brew.

I called in reenforcements for this guy. 1L. American style Barleywine here. Poured gold with a white head. Aroma of pine, citrus, caramel, and booze. Lots of citrus up front with a sweet candy finish. Excellent.

Thanks to Kan for this one again. Murky dark orange, medium beige, pancake head. Oxidized, medium caramel, sweet. Flavor is caramel, sherry, alc, sweet malt. Medium to thin and slightly watery. Oxidized and messy bit nice enough.

1L flip-top courtesy of gford217. I got an immediate whiff of toffee and hops when I popped the top. The color is a very nice orange with a sudsy head that immediately laced my snifter. Citrus aromas, oranges and orange rinds along with a toffee and rum-cake smell. It smells like an American Barleywine to me, specifically West Coast. Super sweet flavor that really seems to walk the line between DIPA and barleywine. It is so sweet and fruity that it is borderline cloying. I expected a little bitterness given the 91 IBU’s. This beer reminds me of Stone 10th Anniversary IPA, very sticky and sweet. This is a good beer but I should have shared the bottle, oh well. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-14-2008 01:20:09

Orange with small head. Aroma of Hops, Citrus, and Malts. Taste - Citrus, sweet, malty, and nice hops bite. Overall - It is a good beer, only my 2nd "barely wine" so can’t really speak for the category. But I will definitely try this one again as I could see myself having a few of these.
