3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours opaque black with one finger head with moderate to heavy lacing. Roasted malt , coffee, chocolate milk. Starts sweet throughout first half then mild to moderate bitterness through the medium finish. Tiny bit boozy but well balanced. Mild carbonation. Medium to heavy body. Hint of cinnamon. What does mace taste like? This is a good winter beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dense, dark, brown with a 2.5-inch, creamy, tan, head that is persistent, but eventually settles. Deep, rich, warm, spicy nose with hints of burnt sugar and coffee. Medium-full body with ABV warmth on the palate. Spicy (mace, cinnamon, and nutmeg) and malty with dark roasted-smokey notes. Raisin bread overtones. Dried fruit. Figs? Molasses? Nice lace. Slight sourness in the lingering.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz bottle served in a snifter.
Looks: murky, dark brown; modest head.
Aroma: nice balanced blend of spices and dark roasted grains.
Flavor: Over spiced, with the spices mostly masking the dark malts, dominating the finish, and lingering on and on in the aftertaste.
Feel: smooth; good carbonation level.
O: too much mace.

a bit more hoppy than malty....like a slightly bitter stout...def a winter beer...not much else to work with though...fairly generic... a tad watery

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a thin tan head and some pungent violet and ruby tints. Aroma of alcohol, nuts, earth, caramel, raisins and some light spices. Medium-bodied; Rich malty flavour with some earth, nuts, caramel, toffee and a little prunes and figs. Aftertaste shows mostly malt and caramelised sugars with a little spicy qualities. Overall, a nice rich malty beer with some good sugars, but a lack of complexity and and depth make it good and not great. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tampa, Florida on 03-January-2014 for US$1.79 sampled at home in Washington on 04-February-2014.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours pitch black with a one finger light tan head that is quick to dissipate. Lacing is present but very light and short-lasting.
The aroma has a definite smoky note to it along with roasted malt, caramel, and molasses. There is just a slight tinge of metal but it is not really that distracting.
The flavor throws a lot more complexity into the mix. The smoked meat character is quite nice and is complimented nicely by molasses dark, almost burnt, caramel. Some spices start to become apparent as the beer warms with some nutmeg and cinnamon. Some dark bread undertones also make themselves known. Bitterness is just moderate but is enough to counteract the sweetness. The alcohol is completely hidden.
Overall, a nice winter warmer but for some reason, it just misses the mark for me. The aroma is really lacking and I wish the flavor had a bit more depth. Still it is a very good beer that I would get again during the holidays.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a very dark clear amber color with a one and a half finger taupe-tan colored head. Aromas of coffee, hazelnut, and light fruitiness. Soft mouthfeel that scrubs a bit mid-palate. Plenty of sorghum in the flavor. Some toffe and dark fruit. All flavors are very mild making it a drinkable beer.

On tap. Very good Christmas ale. Drinks like a porter. The spice they’ve used here is excellent - delicious and in the perfect proportion.
