COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Definitely one of the finer American Brown Ales. A deep copper colored, mild brown ale. SGB is accentuated by a slight nuttiness from its malt character. Designed to be a session beer it has a real smooth finish with a very subtle hop character.

Medal: Gold medal winner at the 2001 Great American Beer Festival – English Style Brown Ales.

Malt: 2 Row, Black, Victory, 30-37 Carastan, 70-80 Crystal, Chocolate

Hops: Columbus, Willamette

Had this one on tap. Appearance is a deep brown with a light tan head. Aroma is malty sweet and the taste is roasted malt with a slight nuttiness. Light bodied and easy to drink.

Draft... Pours clear and dark brown with copper flashes when held up to bright light. The nose is toasty and lightly chocolaty. Medium-bodied with adequate carbonation. The flavor is nearly a perfect reflection of the aroma, but also includes a faint, vinous, port-like characteristic. It trends a smidge toward the sweet side of balance, but not by much. Crisp, lightly vinous, mildly sweet finish. Went well with my order of smoked wings at Broken Barrel Tavern.

Keg somewhere in Asheville. Copper pour with a tiny head. Honey oat bar nose. Toasted bread, some roasted chestnuts. Taste is similar earthy, toasty. Caramel malt, toffee-dipped apples. Sticky toffee pudding. Toasted oat bran cereal. Medium body, soft carbonation. OK.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Clear mahogany with a pale khaki head and good lacing. Aroma of mildly roasted malt, nuts and caramel. Taste of lots of nuttiness, mild roasted malt and caramel. Medium body and medium carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle thanks to Danny. Pours with bright clarity, brown in color, minimal white head. Nose is dusty and reminds me of Munich malt. Some bread crust notes as well. Taste is slightly roasty up front with some slight bitterness. Mouthfeel is a little thin, Otherwise, a very enjoyable brown ale.

Rated from notes taken on -- Drank at the ATL airport, pretty standard brown, not much to write home about.

Caramel and molasses flavor hits the palette and stays there. Not my favorite style and I prefer a crisp finish with a few different notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: MAY 2, 2014 As with most of the beers I review, I end up re-rating after finishing the 6 pack. My opinion of this beer has gone down a little. The taste is not unpleasant but it is a little trashy and not what I would call enjoyable. There is a smoothness there but not nearly as smooth as a bill Clinton apology.

Decent brown ale. Mild roasted and nutty aroma. Soft brown color with a foamy head. Average palate that had a little weight but easy to drink. Flavors were standard fare with darker malts, a little earthy with some nut. A little bit of malt punch at the end and a mild hops presence. OK but not their best.

Interesting and quite nutty i the features. Poured in a big glass at the Atlanta airport sweetwater pub.
