Definitely one of the finer American Brown Ales. A deep copper colored, mild brown ale. SGB is accentuated by a slight nuttiness from its malt character. Designed to be a session beer it has a real smooth finish with a very subtle hop character.

Medal: Gold medal winner at the 2001 Great American Beer Festival – English Style Brown Ales.

Malt: 2 Row, Black, Victory, 30-37 Carastan, 70-80 Crystal, Chocolate

Hops: Columbus, Willamette

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. It’s brown alright and when held up to a sunlit window I could detect some reddish notes. The head was tan and thin (1/4 inch) and diminished quickly. No lacing was left on the glass. The aroma was very malty with hints of brown sugar and molasses. The taste is a bit when compared to the aroma. Oh, the taste has the malts, but I was expecting a really sickly sweet brew. I’m happy to report that was not the case. Turns out to be somewhat refreshing and surprisingly light on the palate.

Bottle in Seattle, thanks to my brother who brought it back from source. Darkest copper red-brown, small soapy head. Stale sweet. A bit past expiry unfortunately, I’ll have to revisit. Falls apart a little, sharp malt, metallic with soft creamy robust body. Solid, but not in best shape.

Bottle in Seattle USA. Dark Amber color, tan foam. Nose: dusty somehow, soft and unpercivable caramel. Mouth: mild sweet malts, cola a bit, bitter in a way. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
