Definitely one of the finer American Brown Ales. A deep copper colored, mild brown ale. SGB is accentuated by a slight nuttiness from its malt character. Designed to be a session beer it has a real smooth finish with a very subtle hop character.

Medal: Gold medal winner at the 2001 Great American Beer Festival – English Style Brown Ales.

Malt: 2 Row, Black, Victory, 30-37 Carastan, 70-80 Crystal, Chocolate

Hops: Columbus, Willamette

Bottle. The pour was a hazy copper brown with an average sized (1-2 finger) creamy beige head that lasted for a decent while thus producing some very good sheets of lace on the glass. The aroma was typical of a Brown Ale with some roasted chocolate malts, a smidgen of herbal hops and a doughy yeast with notes of coffee, caramel, brown sugar and a very light dark fruit ester. The taste was malty to say the least with mild chocolate and caramel notes from the beginning and finished about the same but with a slight hoppy bitterness, a touch of brown sugar and a strong coffee presence. The flavor hung around for a little while with the taste of coffee being the most dominant, but also having a very mild sweet bitterness to it. Mouthfeel was just a shade under medium in body with the texture being creamy and a little oily and having a medium carbonation. Overall a pretty straight forward Brown Ale. Bold and tasty, but with no surprises. Most definitely a brew you could drink a few of.

Decent brown ale part of a sampler pack. Deep brown color with a slight ruby hue. Sufficient dark tan head with good lacing left around the glass. Nice full of sweet malts, caramel, chocolate and light hops. More of the hops show through in the flavors, but the chocolate and sweet maltiness dominate. More caramel, chocolate, bread and yeasty notes show in the flavors as well.

Almost a nutty taste with coffee as the finisher. This brew is alright. This is just a filler now. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Nice light brown color, but not much else stands out for me. Just your average pour, imo.

2oz on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Mostly clear amber brown color. Good thin off-white head. Nutty nose, touch of dark fruit, a little vanilla. Toasty in the flavor. Medium body. Smooth, kind of creamy lighter carbonation. Very light dry finish. Some chocolate. Light to moderate sweet taste, light bitter, satisfyingly dry finish. A pretty solid english-style brown.
