alexanderj (1346), San Diego, California, USA Jun 30, 2008 ON tap at the Merrifield location; definitely my favorite of the night. Poured a more brown than black dark color with the remnents of brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, some smoke and pepper. Flavor was balanced with the peppers adding a more roasty than spicy presence. Liked the subtlety in that. Good beer.
wilkie (1092), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Aug 13, 2008 Growler, from Shenandoah Beer Throwdown. Thanks ken! Pours black, small white head. Aroma is chocolate, and otherwise not too descript. Flavor is mild pepper, smoke, chocolate, with a dry dry finish. Dickinsonbeer (2550), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Jul 22, 2008 Growler shared by kmweaver. Pours a mederately dark brown almost black with a thin lasting head. nice chocolate malt nose with a nice hint of smokey peppers. Good roasted malts, black, and chocoalte malts, light smoke, earthy and good peppery notes. Smooth with a lingering spiciness in the end- nice porter. TURDFERGUSON (1153), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Jul 17, 2008 Growler, shared by kmweaver. Thanks Ken! Nose is roasty and very porter-like with hardly any noticeable chipotle flavor. Flavor is nicely roasty, a bit smokey, and a bit of darker chocolate and hops. Like mike says, its good overall as a porter, but its disappointing in its advertisement as a chipotle porter. acrdz (4379), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jul 15, 2008 Updated: Jul 16, 2008Porter rating #200. Draft @ Merrifield. Dark, unfiltered brown body with a patchy medium-dark brown head. Straight-up as a porter it’s quite good, very well made, but there’s little chipotle character until it reaches room temperature, and even then it’s still very mild. Nose is cocoa and roast with a mild note of smoked malt. Texture is full and heavy, abundant semi-sweet chocolate, moderately heavy roast, more smoke malts, and, again, only the faintest touch of hotness from the peppers when it’s reached room temperature, and really only in the finish. Overall it’s a delicious, well-made porter, but disappointing with the lack of chile character. 19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Jul 11, 2008 Growler from Merrifield. Dark cola pour with a mocha head. Aromas of roastm dark chocolate, and a bit of fruit; however, no pepper to be found. The flavor again is "basis porter" with nary a hint of pepper to warm me. Only allowing the beer to warm up to dangerous temperatures is the pepper character observed. A decent porter, but the billing of chipotle and then not really finding it saddened me.
