Growler shared by ryan at the RBSG Grand Tasting... an interesting place to pad my dominance of Virginia beers. Neat! Pours a clear brown color with a medium tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee and nutty notes. The taste is caramel. nutty notes and roasted malts. Medium bodied. Nice.

Deep thin brownish amber, with some white head. Aroma is very mild, with a touch of sweetness, chocolate and malt. Flavor has roasted malts, caramel and a moderate sweetness. Malty finish with bitter hops.

I think this should probably be listed as a schwarzbier. Big roasty, chocolate nose, some light toffee and a touch of molasses. Nice and dry taste, lightly bitter, lots of milk chocolate, a bit of roast, very light smoke and a bit of molasses. Medium/light body is silky smooth with moderate carbonation. Brilliant stuff!

Growler. Clear brown pour with a very fluffy light tan head. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, and licorice. Lightly sweet chocolaty flavor with some cracker and smoke. Goes down real smooth and easy. Some bitter hops to finish. Amazing session beer.

(Sample Date: 5/16/2009 Source:Other) Clean lager character in aroma. Clear dark amber brown with a small white head. Malty caramel with good balance of bitterness. Low spicy hop character.

At Falls Church location. Pours a pretty dark color (almost black) with a medium, fast dissipating head. Notes of smoke and a strong roasted malt aroma. Flavor is malty, roasted, *much* better after allowing the frozen glass to warm up after about 20 minutes.

A dark lager with a little bit of smoke on the nose and palate. The hickory is balanced out by the beer’s yeast, which is bready and rich. Clean finish, a drinkable dunkel that borrows the best elements of a rauchbier without overdoing the smokiness.

On tap at Sweetwater Tavern - Centreville on 05/16/2009. Clear deep amber body with ruby highlights and a small frothy off-white head. Sweet toasty and bready aroma with some chocolate and light molassas. Sweet roast and chocolate flavor with a bit of toasty and bready malt. Medium body with mdoerately high carbonation.

Clear deep amber coloured body with a thin off-white head. Aroma of malt, nuts and a bit of spice. Light to Medium-bodied; Malty flavour up front with some light hops and subtle spices and nuts noticeable as well. Aftertaste shows more of the same, nothing great noticeable throughout the beer. Overall, not really worth trying unless you’ve had everything else at the brewpub - there are too many other beer offerings here. I sampled this beer on draught as a sampler at the Shirlington Oktoberfest in Arlington, Virginia on 07 October 2006.

On tap at the Merrifield location. No nose, not much flavor, mild finish. A mediocre offering from a chain-brewpub. I was glad I’d only asked for a sample and hadn’t wasted the price of a pint on this.
