Sampled at RBSG Grand Rapids. Deep amber pour. A little bit of soft cocoa. Fresh and earthy. Cocoa overlying some mostly pale malt. Fairly clean finish though. A touch of roast on the back - but nothing crazy. Long lingering bitterness.

A dark lager with a little bit of smoke on the nose and palate. The hickory is balanced out by the beer’s yeast, which is bready and rich. Clean finish, a drinkable dunkel that borrows the best elements of a rauchbier without overdoing the smokiness.

Tap at Centreville. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (roast, chocolate, coffee), average hops (spicy), and notes of prune and tar. Flavor is average malt (toast, coffee, chocolate, roast), average-light hops (spicy, floral), and notes of tar and charcoal. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth with a dry finish.

Draft at Sweetwater-Merrifield. From memory. Pours a medium brown with large tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with some coffee. Taste is same with some added sweet caramel. Decent, one of the better offerings from Sweetwater.

On tap 6 oz. sampler at Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville, VA. Clear, very dark mahogany with no head and fair lacing. It appears the head was removed before serving. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, wood, grain, caramel and a touch of light fruit. Taste of sweet roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, smoked wood and nuts. Medium/full body and low/medium carbonization. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Almost the same coloration as the pale ale on tap....deep red if held to the light, dark brown/black if looked at with no direct light. Very roasty smelling, taste is the same. Roast/light chocolate/nuts/caramel. The first few days this was on tap it was not very good but as the end of the batch neared, it seemed to take on a better flavor profile. Not sure why. Mouthfeel is just about non-existent. This one is a bit disappointing compared to the other dark beers they usually rotate on tap, but still a good sessionable beer if out on the town with friends.

At Falls Church location. Pours a pretty dark color (almost black) with a medium, fast dissipating head. Notes of smoke and a strong roasted malt aroma. Flavor is malty, roasted, *much* better after allowing the frozen glass to warm up after about 20 minutes.

Pours a deep mahogany color but slightly transparent. Decent malt profile of caramel and chocolate malt. Slight bitter metallic hop finish. All of it comes in a little flat. I would think you could add a little more of everything and get a more full bodied beer.
