An excellent dark brown beer with a very full-bodied flavour; sweet maltiness, roast grain, dark chocolate, bitterness, some candy sugar, nuttiness... a long list of flavours which is brought together well in the big, roast malt finish. Top stuff.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 31, 2008 I won’t pretend to be an expert in stout categories but this one could have easily been characterised as a sweet stout. It has a soft black appearance if that is possible, meaning that while it is indeed dark it is not a negra fuerte as some of the oilier versions can be. Held up to the light this does show a little brownish hue. Good lacing in the glass shows a firm viscous grip of the head. I love the burnt coffee and chocolate malt presence on the nose and the equally roasted bitterness coupled with subtle hops. This is the third in this stable for me and by far the best. Frank Zappa once said a country with credibility should have an airline and a beer. He may have been referring to the typical pale lager which would fail one of the criteria in my book. Chile has credibility with this real example of a fine style of beer that is more than just an attempt by a national brewing cartel at feeding the masses with a faintly malty alcoholic beverage. Not too much aroma, but the counterpart is a long, pleasant finish in palate. Better just cold, half an hour out from fridge, then open it. Excelent for meat or elaborated dishes.
