Panzerfaust (374), Santiago, Chile Apr 5, 2008 Pours a hazy yellow colour with a moderately big white dense head. It lasts for a while and leaves a small but solid lacing.
Aroma is hoppy with fruity notes: lime, grass, citrus, pineapple. More grassy than flowery or citrusy hops. A trace of eucaliptus, pine and some fruity hints of peaches and grapefruits come to mind.
Flavor is rather sweet unfortunately. Fruity with grassy hops again, sweet citrus, orangey touches, hints of ’mote con huesillos’, pineapples, passionfruit. Not bad, flavorful and refreshing, but I would have loved a bitter pilsner in Chile.
Body is medium. Fair carbonation. Smooth, soft texture on the mouth. It finishes with some astringency and a shadow of faint hoppy bitterness. A good pils but the weakest Szot IMHO.
Sully (1361), Stanmore, New South Wales, Australia Apr 4, 2008 This has the usual clean appearance of a pilsner when poured, well at least until I upend the very last of the bottle when the yeast muddies the waters a bit. Not to worry though as there is nothing wrong with a bottle conditioned beer. There is ample carbonation at first but it is followed up with a fine beading. The Alcohol content of this beer provides great lacing as well. The head is huge and rocky which enhances the look substantially. I found it hard to find a real nose to this beer as one would hope for a pilsner. There is a suble spiciness and herbal note but not enough for me. The flavour is the let down. Bitterness is present but the hop profile reminds me of a pride of ringwood rather than a noble pilsner hop. The POR in Australia only adds bitterness with little or no aroma and I am sorry to say this is the case here. Anyway, brewers produce their beeer for the local market and given the usual Chilean penchant for avoiding very hoppy beers this is probably still going to be a successful brew. almosi (279), Viña del Mar, Chile Feb 21, 2008 Has a golden, but dark color, with a cloudy aspect. The aroma is well hoppy, though there is presence of small peaches and dried fruits. The flavor is penetrating for the caramel. The bitterness is small (in spite of his label that Pilsner says). This beer more near the Ale, that of the Pilsner. Has a rather slight, silky and soft body. Really i not as describes this beer, it is not an Ale and is not a Pilsner. Rare. davidpl (393), Santiago, Chile Feb 2, 2008 Appearance: golden color. Medium head, white and lasting.
Aroma: hoppy’s smells with slight citric touch and herbal notes. Malts, yeast and fruit’s aromas like pineapple and oranges. Slightly mentholated.
Flavor: light sweetness from pale malts, quickly to make up by the medium and lasting dryness from Sterling hops (no Saaz), too refreshing-light sourness with pineapple’s, orange’s and grapefruit’s reminiscences. Some astringent hoppy, light mentholated aftertaste.
Palate: light body with silky texture. Low to medium carbonated.
Nice pilsner and some close to an ale, for the complexity. Pleasant dry hoppiness, refreshing, balanced and with the “core” of a real pilsner but with the touch of Szot.
