Bottled from Biernavigatie.nl. Copper colored, initially very big head, good lacing. Malty nose, wood, raisins, hint of apple, yeast, bit like La Trappe’s Quadrupel. Bittersweet flavor, some wood, malts, alcohol. It feels like all the ingredients are present, but are somehow not in full harmony. Perhaps the wood needs to be toned down, or the beer itself requires some more aging.

Hotel tasting with Colin Theydon Bois. Lightly hazy deep amber beer, good fluffy pale cream colour head. Palate is airy with fine carbonation. Semi dry. Smooth dry malts, touch of caramel. Floralness. Spicy dried fruits. Little toffee and brandy on the semi dry finish. Fine.

Bottle split with Kenny in the special surprise room tasting, Amsterdam Inntel pre Borefts livener, 25/09/14. Hazed chestnut brown with a good sized beige covering that retains well. Nose is dark fruits, toffee, light medicianls, spice, malty notes. Taste comprises light smoke, spice, more medicinal tunes, dark fruit rinds, dates. Medium bodied, spritzy and overcarbed, light booze in the close. Very average for style, doesn’t drink to 10% but also doesn’t deliver for that ABV!

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2014 Pours dark brown with a off-white and brownish (sugary) head. Quite appealling looks. Bit coffee-like... Had to react quick, since the bottle gushed like a geiser after opening it... Guess it’s pretty carbonated. Aromas of hops, yeast, malts, some burnt wood as well. Heavy alcoholic smell though, which crushes the sweetness actually. Some smelly ham as well. Definitely a pity. Taste is a soft bitter, not too sweet and a bit alcoholic. Smokey, clear taste of the shreds of oak. Strong bitter, and quite alcoholic peppery aftertaste with a small sweetish kick. Yet, the alcohol is too omnipresent and literally takes the sweetness away too early... Medium bodied, creamy texture and heavy carbonated (a bit too carbonated). Had to get used to this brew’s taste in general. But after a while, it gets somewhat tasty in quite a whisky-like way. However, it lacks balance since it is too alcoholic and tends to lose all the sweetness very quick. Furthermore the aroma is quite unpleasant and too alcoholic, which made each sip to go accompanied with a large dash of alcohol in the nose... Less alcohol in the aroma and the taste, and it would do a hell of a lot better. Now it’s just a bit of a miss. Pity.

Bottle. Pours a dark ruby red with a large, beige head. Aroma is roasted, caramelly, dried fruit, chocolate. Taste is semi-sweet with caramel, dried fruit, ’t IJ yeast, earthiness, lightly boozy, but not in a disturbing way. Strong carbonation, quite full.

Afdronk is bitterzoet, licht rokerig.

33 cl bottle @ home (bought @ the brewery). Deep ruby brown color, mostly clear. Light beige wobbly head with fairly long retention and some lacing. Aroma’s: sweet malts, a bit toffee-ish, some smoke, some red fruit, notes of wood. Retronasal I get sweet malts, red fruit, some smoke and some wood-notes. Moderate sweet flavor, rather IJ-ish, some woody dryness, some fruit. Alcohol feel is quite strong and warming. Medium bodied. Finish is moderate bitter, lightly dry. Maybe not a true barley wine and not entirely balanced, but I still enjoyed it.
