After the ‘Zatte’, this is the oldest beer from Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Natte is classed as a ‘dubbel’, a Belgian category of smooth, dark beers. Because we partly use dark malt, Natte has a reddish-brown colour and a smooth, roasted flavour with earthy tones of brown sugar, nuts and plums. Completed with slightly bitter hops, this is a nicely balanced beer and one of the brewery’s classics.

Sample from a 33cl bottle (26 IX 2015), shared with De Meetjeslandse Bierproevers. A not that strong dubbel with red black appearance. Quite slick. The malt flavours are heavy, with caramel, coffee, chocolate, nuts. Not exactly what I expected, so very surprising and promising. Some liquorice hints at a heavy sugarness. Yet the brew is only medium sweet, making this an excellent abbey ale. With a creamy texture and medium palate, this is one of ’t IJ finests.

Lore (2043) - Budapest, HUNGARY - DEC 18, 2015
opalescent mahogany colour, medium sized yellowish head; aroma of sour cherry, caramel, earthy notes and some apple; taste of malty sweetness with roasted bittery notes, sour cherry and maybe some apple and dark chocolate notes; not a typical dubbel (neither its colour, nor its aroma/taste really suits the category), but still enjoyable

33cl bottle on 27-Oct-2015 in Amsterdam. Amber colour with a thin sized head. Medium sized tan coloured head. Aroma and flavour of malt, caramel and hops. Nice and hoppy. Slightly sweet. More like a red ale than a dubbel.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with white head. Aroma is mostly of apples, some caramel. Taste apples and caramel too, sweet. Some weird sea weed taste nuancies.. Not good

33cl bottle. Deep brown pour with thin light brown head, some lacing. Aromas of sour fruit, burned wood and fresh grass. Taste is medium bitter, malty, sweet and really dry. Low carbonation, really oily palate. Aftertaste is long - first comes oranges and finish is burned malt. Really interesting stuff and delicious.

Amber. Aroma wood, sea weed, rotten apples and pears. Broken, full of esters...maybe just a bad bottle. Me not likes it.

330ml bottle. Mid brown colour. Off-white head. Aroma of toasted grains, liquorice, leather. Tastes quite similar. Some fruity notes near to raisins or dates. Taste is not too sweet. Solid example of this style.
