Deep, fairly clear ruby-mahagony catches the light nicely, and the cream-colored foam that sits atop the beer lasts nicely. The aroma is full of overripe fruits and more fruit that was caramelized (kind of like a brown sugar and fruit sauce). There’s a bit of a floral (roses and honeysuckle) nature underneath the heavy fruits. The flavor is less exciting than the aroma, but still comes up with a nice supporting caramel flavor to back up what the nose picked up. A lingering bit of bananas foster in the finish leaves you with a pleasant memory of the beer. Brandon (wunderbier) warned me to leave the yeast in the bottle as it’s a very potent strain, and I have to agree with him, without the yeast, this is a very underrated beer from an underrated brewery.

330ml Bottle - Hazy brown with a foamy beige head. Fruity aroma with spicy malt and hints of marzipan and more spicy elements. Fruity and slightly sweet taste with dried fruit, spices and more hints of marzipan. Very drinkable and I enjoyed this one.

Hazy dark amber colored with a frothy off-white head. Dominating yeast and spice aroma, herby and chocolaty tones. Extremely herby flavor, typical for ’t IJ, probably from the yeast. Notes of malt, toffee and spices. Foamy soft mouthfeel.

Bottle: Dark brown, bit murky appearance, big off white head. Aroma of IJ yeast funkiness, brown sugar, roasted malts, spices. Taste is brown sugar sweetness, spices, some sourness. Nice creamy mouthfeel. On tap @ IJ brouwerij: A bit sweeter, and a bit more sourness in the aftertaste. Very nice dubbel.

33 cl, notched "at least maintainable to" June, 2004! Nearly opaque brown-black with a large creamy head that lasts and frosts the glass well. Great nose of earthy spices, dates, musty plums, caramel, brown sugar-molasses, and slight chocolate. Flavors are similar with added notes of funk, roasted nuts, cocoa, raspberry, wood and more spices for great balance. Cured tobacco in the finish. Smooth, medium-heavy body is a little sticky but in a nice dessert-beer way, and finishes slightly dry with a little alcohol warming. Maybe everyone should rate a 6-8 year old bottle of this stuff.

cloudy, even muddy to say the least..brown!...darkish brown solid sheet of head...musty aroma with some cardboard notes..and maybe some chocolate, brown sugar, and caramel...astringent palate of plasticy caramel malt...plasticy bitterness...sweet but wierd.

Brown, cloudy color is inviting. I’m getting buttered popcorn in the nose, with a little sugar. A full malty taste has hints of chocolate. Not for the weak at heart. I should mention that I sampled this at the ’t Ij brewery and it was delicious. (Be sure to get there early enough to grad a table. TIP: take the #10 tram there).

Thanks to retro42 for sharing. Hazy brown body with faint carbontation. Massive head. Nutty aroma with a sweet body.
