Deep garnet body with a light brown sugar colored head. The aroma is sweet with prunes and some hints of herbs. There is also a definite milk chocolate note. The taste is raspberries with some iced mocha. There is also some light cola in the finish. A pleasing brew, this is interesting. Very low carbonation.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a big dark cream colored head. Orange, spice, sweet malt aroma. Spicy, orange, yeasty, malt flavor. Yeast, orange, and spice linger. Medium body. Fairly dry, bready finish. This is a beer that’s just calling out for some Brett.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 sayravai (4522) - Helsinki, FINLAND - APR 29, 2004
UPDATED: AUG 1, 2007 (Bottled, too cold) Very hazy darkish amber with a small head and big yeast clumps. Sourish aroma of cloves and green apple with light dried fruitiness. Anise-spicy, sourish-malty, yeasty and flowery flavor with some fermented strawberries and a dry, mildly bitter finish. Medium-bodied palate with smooth carbonation. A pleasant, light and flowery, somewhat Orvaly (although not as strong) brew.
(Bottled, was 6-4-7-4-13=3.4) Dark brown color, small head. Sour, yeasty aroma. Malty, nutty, sourish flavor. Medium-bodied, somewhat carbonated, sour palate. Strange as a dubbel, but quite ok as a beer.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 tiggmtl (4467) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 13, 2005
Brussels sprouts and oily nits in the aroma with a dusty, coiny character. Opaque reddish-brown with two-finger, fizzy, off-white head that recedes almost instantly to partial cover and ring. Tired, bland, meaty notes to the sweet nutty flavour that also exhibits a fair amount of boiled vegetables. Light earthy, grapey undertone. Medium body with fair carbonation. Bottle sampled with MartinT, Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere. Best Before was notched twice for month 09/10 and twice for year 03/04.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2007 Largish offwhite head. Hazy opaque light brown body with carbonation. Light wooden bananaish aroma with vague rubbery notes. Deep wooden, bananaish, roasty malty taste with spicy notes. Peppery. Dry, spicy aftertaste. Very nice. (0.33l bottle.)
2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - MAY 31, 2004
33 cl bottle, purchased at The Foodery in Philadelphia. Dark maple, "dubbel" type appearance, largish lasting head. Aromatic brown sugar, molasses, orangepeel and tulip in the nose, wonderful. Flavor alas a huge disappointment: old wet cardboard, sour, vinegary malt, no sweetness or fruit whatsoever, really unpleasant...could be a bad bottle I suppose? At any rate, I can’t give it good marks on this initial try...if the other t IJ beers I have are fine, I’ll chalk it up to poor storage or age. Close to undrinkable as is.
