After the ‘Zatte’, this is the oldest beer from Brouwerij ‘t IJ. Natte is classed as a ‘dubbel’, a Belgian category of smooth, dark beers. Because we partly use dark malt, Natte has a reddish-brown colour and a smooth, roasted flavour with earthy tones of brown sugar, nuts and plums. Completed with slightly bitter hops, this is a nicely balanced beer and one of the brewery’s classics.

330ml bottle in great company with Hege and OleR at Håndverkerstuene. Amber coloured body with a ruby tint. Diminishing grey-white head. Poor lacing. Aroma of dark malts, mid-sweet, and herbal hops. Peaches, plums and caramel malts in flavour. Sweet and bitter to the finish. Well balanced and fine with the lamb (Oslo, 15.09.2012).

Bottle at home from Jumbo supermarket. Had it before but apparently never rated. Near clear dark brown pour with thin bubbly offwhite head. Smells yeasty and sweet. Sweet toasted caramel and choco malts. Fudge, brown sugar caramel, dades, banana, butterscotch, IJ yeast. Over medium sweet, light bitter. Medium body, soft carbonation. Smooth body with a light chalky grain in the texture. Finish is long and bittersweet, butterscotch.

Had my first Natte about 30 years ago, shortly after the brewery’s opening. I didn’t have this in my RB life though, until now. 33 cl bottle @ De Waaghals, A’dam. Mostly clear ruby brown. Light beige head, dense, with good retention. Aroma’s: sweet, fruit, yeasty, a bit banana. Flavor is moderate sweet with light bitterness. Medium bodied. Finishes yeasty, moderate bitter. Still quite nice, but of course I liked it a lot more 30 years ago.

Red beer, No Head. Hoppy, malty, light roasted beer. Lasting sweet aftertaste. Reasonable good mouthfeel. Indeed nicely balanced. Not as sweet as Most dubbels.

Vom Fass. Bernsteinfarbenes Bier, kaum Schaum. Schöner Duft nach roten Johannisbeeren. Antrunk etwas Holz und Malz. Dann kommen rote Beeren. Sehr süffig. Sanft bitter im Abgang.
