Fantomas23 (463), Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 21, 2006 This beer was hearty, thick and fresh, but it should have been fresh because I was drinking it in the same town as it is brewed. I had no idea of its strength at the time but it sure explains why the rest of the night is kind of hazy after a full day of drinking. I would definitely appreciate another sampling of this with fresh tastebuds. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA May 10, 2006 Bottled. Murky, dark mahogany color. Sweet malty aroma with a very sweet flavor as well. Slightly hot. A bit confusing. bmanning (142), Arlington, Virginia, USA May 10, 2006 Pours a hazy, copperish brown with a large fine-bubble tan head. Unique aroma with a lot of pineapple, candy smarties, spiced apples, and caramel. Plenty of spices dominate the aroma along with tropical fruits Mmmm, the spices give it a very complex, delicous taste The initial malty and yeasty flavors slowly melt into a spicy, tasty medicine-like finish. There’s something about this beer that leaves you wanting more and more after every taste. This is exactly what I would expect from an Amsterdam beer. It’s rich, creamy, smooth, and leaves your taste buds tingling. An explosion of dark fruit and spices in the flavor along with a funky yeast taste that can only be described as Amsterdam at it’s best, makes this beer a very special one. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA Apr 8, 2006 Bottle at Delirium Cafe. Poured bronw with ruby red notes. Medium beige head. Caramel, malt aroma similar to the Feuillien I just had. Short lived malty flavor with some grass notes poking through. Alcohol is well hidden. Watery finish. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 8, 2006 Very decent yeasty. Yes candi, pineapple, apples. Though overall not too complex. Creamy medium-thin mouthfeel. Could use food for mouth puckering finish Lunkie (1020), Glen Iris, Australia Feb 27, 2006 Sweet malt hop aroma. cloudy dark brown colour with good head and lacing. Hop malt flavour with a hint of celery? Fizzy palate. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands Feb 24, 2006 very nice spicy saison-like beer. lots of spices, yeast and fruit in the nose. tastes spicy and then more fruity and malty. finishes sweet sourrish and a bit alcoholic(hides its alc. still very well). great!!!! Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Feb 20, 2006 Poured into a Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass, Struis is a solid ruddybrown color, with cocoa-tinged tannish foam resting neatly atop. Looks alright by me.
Nose: yeast and spice hit a two-pronged attack, and fruit takes up the rear, dark ones, plums, and dates, and grapes, and raisins, and more. Drink it in deeper and the spices have taken over, peppers and clove and more. Definitely dubbel-ish, this. Rich and lovely.
Taste it: wonderful! A big explosion on the palate, a delirious blend of dark fruits, spices, and hefty malt, uplifted by Belgian yeast that adds a wicked funk to the proceedings. Berries become bigger in the flavor profile, grape stands tall, as well. And then up comes plum!
This is a fun beer, to be sure. Full-bodied, long finish, impeccable flavors, evident, but untroubling alcohol. A great Belgian beer from the Netherlands, and why the hell not?
I will return to this one, that I can guarantee!
