kepano (239), Meudon, France Aug 20, 2006 Second in our second ’t IJ triptych, the Struis was certainly a paradigmatic example of this humble Amsterdamian brewery’s savoir-faire. A clinging collar of cream-colored foam floats with facility on the fluvial cinnamon Styx. Fragrant puffs of fruit flow to the nostrils, unhurriedly revealing mango, apricot, banana, orange and pear, further interwoven with white pepper and coriander, with toffee and brown sugar. Impatience seizes the better of me, and an expeditious sip sends the sample slithering to my stomach. A simple sigh, but full of glee, escapes my open lips. The sigh that secret agents sigh, as they salvage and swallow the single flask of antidote. At this instant, a smile stretches across my visage, while my brain rewinds and orchestrates one more time the subtle symphony that pulsates through each tastebud. Viscous and sweet, mango and passion fruit, chocolate and coffee, nutmeg and pepper. Though I force each note to last, the melody soon fades and with a final glissando my glass empties. Beautiful. Drink cold.
Fin (3382), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Nov 2, 2009 Had this from bottle at the brewpub, Amsterdam, 27th Oct 2009 Pours hazy dark brown with an off-white filmy head. There are malts and hops in abundance on the nose and also in the mouth along with a nice chewiness, bit of banana and a very nice warmth from the alcohol. Soft in the mouth, good spiciness, powerful brew, but tasty stuff and the third very nice beer from this brewpub. A7 A4 F7 P5 Ov15 3.8 Allen (1284), Switzerland Aug 20, 2009 Bottled 33cl. Hazy ruby with a nicely lasting lacing light beige head. The nose is really impressive- reminiscent of Orval. Candied fruits, hops and blackberries throughout. Maltier than Orval. Strong carbonation. Complex. I reveled in every sip. A fantastic beer! BeerChaser0078 (284), Melbourne, Australia Aug 7, 2009 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a fruity nose that has a hint of spirit. There are flavours of apples, cinnamon and dates and the mouth is quite dry. A pretty good beer but there is a slight sourness to it which I don’t find as endearing as a lot of other beers in this style. daniele (1642), Italy Jul 29, 2009 scura buona schiuma persitente note fruttate esteri alcoliche tosature caffe leggero acido cosi in bocca rimane morbida complessa ma ancora acidità SaintMatty (1197), Tallinn, Estonia Jul 17, 2009 330ml Bottle - Hazy brown with a foamy tan head. Fruity and spicy aroma with raisins, caramel and some pleasant spicy hints. Fruity taste with a tart and spicy element with rangers and a hint of clove. Not bad and very drinkable. Chrism86 (273), Melbourne, Australia Jul 10, 2009 Pours hazy, dark amber/brown with a nice tan coloured head. Nose is multilayered, caramel/toffee malt figs, raisins and yeast spice. Palate is a little more one dimensional with yeast spice dominating the finish. Good beer, actually would have prefered a touch of the brett-like tartness etc that the rest of the range have ala orval. Still pretty impressive beer. cellar (483), Dublin, Ireland May 11, 2009 Unclear dark amber with nice head. Malty yeasty aroma of caramal, honey, fruit and flowers. Flavour is sweet with sour touch in finish AR (417), Georgia, USA Apr 22, 2009 This is a nice Belgian that is very sweet and syrupy. There are flavors of dark fruit and a spicy caramel that all linger on the tongue.
