kepano (239), Meudon, France Aug 20, 2006 Second in our second ’t IJ triptych, the Struis was certainly a paradigmatic example of this humble Amsterdamian brewery’s savoir-faire. A clinging collar of cream-colored foam floats with facility on the fluvial cinnamon Styx. Fragrant puffs of fruit flow to the nostrils, unhurriedly revealing mango, apricot, banana, orange and pear, further interwoven with white pepper and coriander, with toffee and brown sugar. Impatience seizes the better of me, and an expeditious sip sends the sample slithering to my stomach. A simple sigh, but full of glee, escapes my open lips. The sigh that secret agents sigh, as they salvage and swallow the single flask of antidote. At this instant, a smile stretches across my visage, while my brain rewinds and orchestrates one more time the subtle symphony that pulsates through each tastebud. Viscous and sweet, mango and passion fruit, chocolate and coffee, nutmeg and pepper. Though I force each note to last, the melody soon fades and with a final glissando my glass empties. Beautiful. Drink cold.
cellar (473), Dublin, Ireland May 11, 2009 Unclear dark amber with nice head. Malty yeasty aroma of caramal, honey, fruit and flowers. Flavour is sweet with sour touch in finish AR (373), Georgia, USA Apr 22, 2009 This is a nice Belgian that is very sweet and syrupy. There are flavors of dark fruit and a spicy caramel that all linger on the tongue. TaxiDriver (826), Stadland, Germany Apr 16, 2009 Bottle. A very sweet aroma of caramel, Port, also some yeast. The head is very large, white and foamy with a long duration. The body is dark orange to red. A light sour taste of yeast, light burning, malt and some caramel in the middle part. The finish is rather long. The body is medium strong, creamy and with much carbonation. gam (889), brisbane, Australia Apr 12, 2009 Misty yellow brown beer nice head good carbonation aroma clove woodyness malt flavour clove bitter good caramel sultana sugar aniseed nutmeg bitter sweet hop and a smooth finish BOLTZ7555 (918), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Mar 29, 2009 Bottle sampled @ Freakin’ Frog, LV. Garnet colored beer with a small tapioca head that left nice ringlets of lacing on the inside of the glass. Aroma is brown sugar, dark fruit, caramel and Belgian yeast. Flavor is toffee, molasses, cherry skin, and biscuit. Also has an almost brett-like sourness which adds to the complexity. Nice mouthfeel and highly drinkable. Really enjoyed this one. Ethereal (1458), London, Greater London, England Mar 22, 2009 Bottle at Café Gollem, Amsterdam, 14th March 09. Reddish brown, very hazy. Lots of raspberry and caramel malt. Sweet but not special. frankenkitty (1873), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Mar 12, 2009 Pours lovely... bronze from the bottle to mahogany in the glass, with a mild fizz before a small, cream colored head which reduces to a Christo-esque island surrounded by film. Yeast and malt dominate the aroma with yellow cheeses and taffy and mustiness. Over time, she reveals more defined cheesish yeasts, Parmesan, cheddar, feta. Mid-bodied with a sticky note to the palate. Flavor finds a berry-touched maltiness alongside tart, mildly funked-out yeastiness, finishing with a sugary kicker that proves to be one of this beer’s few flaws. Overall, tasty & satisfying.

Beer2000 (1619), Kristiansand, Norway Mar 7, 2009 330 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of dark malt, some caramel, hint of dark fruit and a bit spicy. Flavor is medium sweet malty with caramel, dry fruit and moderate hoppy. I think this is my favorite from Brouwerij ’t IJ
