A barley wine brewed in the English style. Struis is a full-bodied beer with a deep, dark colour and a soft, long-lasting head. The aroma is dark and sweet, with clear tones of chocolate and dried fruit. The aftertaste is dry and long-lasting, and leaves you yearning for more. A delicious accompaniment to food and ideal with skeapsrond cheese. Struis is only available as a bottled beer.

Donker amberkleurig met offwhite kop. Geur is zoet (rijpe rode vruchten en caramel). Smaak is zoet van toffee/caramel en rode vruchten en licht bitter. Aldus Huubs. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark reddish colour, beautiful hints of red when held to the light. Two fingers off white head, leaving some lace. Smell of whiskey, or some barrel aged liquor, chocolate, dark fruits. Medium to light body, good carbonation. Taste again of whisky, dark fruits, licorice, chocolate, caramel. Good.

Bottle at home, I must be fair, date on the bottle said 10-2015, so I guess this is an old bottle, and therefore most hoppiness will have gone, but nevertheless... It pours a dark brown, reddish amber hue, light tanned head, its at least too dark to see the carbonation. Its aroma is of dark roasted sweet malt, caramel and a very vague hint of hop. In taste I detected mostly sweet roasted malts, reasonably well masqued gin-like acohol, some doughy sense against an umami, silt like background, some sweet milkchocolate, caramel, bayleaf, liquorice like sweetness, which did make me think of that ’sweetness’ that burned milk can have, some very vague hops and fruitiness, there’s a tiny citric acid edge(lemon) to the aftertaste. It’s got nice soft carbonation and a slightly oily mouthfeel, but by no means that proclaimed long aftertaste, let alone the fruit and chocolate, even the long lasting head wasn’t very lasting... So I guess it was the age of the bottle, I will try it again some day with a younger brew, but I’m surpirsed that a barleywine doesn’t age well... This bottle though, was nice as it was, and I did enjoy it, can’t wait to taste a younger one now!

Pours a dark coppery brown color, topped with a semi-large and very creamy tan colored head. Mild aroma of chocolate, some hints of caramel notes, a bit biscuity as well. Some dry fruit presence, prunes? Taste is sweet, a bit too sweet and malty actually, chocolate and caramel feel. Very creamy with a bit of warming alcohol feel. Not a bad one, though a bit too strong and sweet. Still doable.

Sweet and woody in the aroma. Little bitterness coming through. Taste: very malty, good medium bitterness, some caramel but not too much (hate that), cappucino thing going on too. Pretty full body. Dry aftertaste. Great classic style of beer.
