COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A barley wine brewed in the English style. Struis is a full-bodied beer with a deep, dark colour and a soft, long-lasting head. The aroma is dark and sweet, with clear tones of chocolate and dried fruit. The aftertaste is dry and long-lasting, and leaves you yearning for more. A delicious accompaniment to food and ideal with skeapsrond cheese. Struis is only available as a bottled beer.

Aroma of yeast, cobwebs, dried fruit, coriander. Appears a hazy red amber with a huge off-white head that diminishes but lasts. Flavor is bitter and astringent, with lots of yeasty flavors over raisins and an alcohol tinge - peppery in the finish. Palate is dry and leaves the impression of cobwebs. Overall, an interesting brew but not to my taste. My thanks to SoLan for this fine sampling.

Snel dood. Viezig bruin zoals barley wines vaker zijn.. Veel gist. Ruikt zoet. Smaakt ook wat te zoet..

Bottle. Dark brown hazy liquid with stable beige head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, dried fruits, mollasses. Taste sweet, caramel, dried fruits, some hops, alcohol. Maybe a bit overcarbonated. Good one.

Bottled - Deep amber colour with a thin but long lasting creamy tan head. Sweet malty aromas with a hint of dried frutis like raisins or red fruits and a little bit of herbal hops. Smooth carbonation, full bodied, thick texture. Low hoppy taste, the malty sweetness is dominant. Alcohol warmth is present, but it is not a surprise beside the 9% abv. Fine barley wine.

The bottle has over one year. It has still a very big head. The aroma is dark honey and burned caramel. The flavor is balanced and quite easy to drink. Aftertaste makes me think again about old honey. There is also a flavor of cooked red fruits and tart. In the aftertaste I sense some baryard and wet cardboard. The wet cardboard intensifies after each sip. Despite this error the beer is drinkable.

Very dark brown. Rocky tan froth. Aroma is very low: dough, bread, coffee, grape, caramel. Thin, too sour, light body, short finish. Disappointing.

Bière qualifiée de barley wine, mais qui ressemble plutôt à une double un peu forte. Niveau abv de 9 % , refermentation en bouteille. Couleur brun roux, et rousse en transparence. Bulles fines et très vives partout (forte saturation en co2 à l’ouverture). Mousse beige claire, bien crémeuse, qui nappe à 2 mm. Arômes de malt grillé, noisettes, fèves sèches, acajou, pointe de réglisse. 1ère bouche très soyeuse à l’entame curieuse sur de l’eau de cuisson de riz, et des cacahuètes !!! Arrière-bouche plus classique, d’une double basique. 2ème à la texture toujours très soyeuse, mais les saveurs manquent d’harmonie. Arrière-bouche de faible niveau, avec quelques herbes. 3ème avec malt chocolat, pointe de tourbe et fumée, pointe de bogue de noix. Arrière-bouche déséquilibrée, courte. Longueur mieux équilibrée, un peu de fût, mais toujours de curieuses herbes. Jambes marquées, un peu collantes. Levure mince, très petite ligne. Alcool qui vient sur la longueur soutenir un peu l’ensemble. Finale plus sympathique. CONCLUSION : bière qui ne commence que sur la longueur, et montre quelques bonnes dispositions à la fin. La texture par contre est belle dès la 1ère bouche. Donc mi-figue, mi-raisin (sans jeu de mots....) pour une double forte qui voulait plagier un barley wine.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 19B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 223 09188. AROMA: initial stale aroma like moldy or wet cardboard, with faint vinous and a sweet background. APPEARANCE: very dark copper with slight ruby highlights and hazy. medium beige head with medium-low retention. alcohol viscosity and lacing present. TASTE: slight oxidation flavours (wet cardboard) mixed with faint mold, sweet maltiness and a vinous aspect. low bitterness with a semi-sweet ans roasted finish. no hop flavours. PALATE: full body with a velvety texture and medium carbonation. smooth alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a barley wine with defect flavours and aromas.

Dark amber brown colour, with almost no light brown head. Aroma of malts, oak, yeasts and caramel. The same is flavour. Malty notes with sour finish. Fruity aftertaste. Delicious beer.

Hazy deep amber color, thin off white head. Aroma and taste of figs, raspberries, malts, wood, yeast. No alcohol. Fairly sweet with dry finish. Full body, soft to average carbonation. Fruity, complex, little bit strange, good.

Alengrin (3030) - BELGIUM - APR 6, 2015
UPDATED: APR 10, 2015 Strong ale intended as an English-style barley wine. Loose and irregular, light beige head, breaking open quickly and further decreasing to a thin rim around the edge of the glass; colour is a very dark burgundy brown-red with light fizz, clear at first but misty with deposit. Sweet, very malty and quite attractive aroma of home made caramel, strong cookie dough effect like in a Scotch ale, crème au beurre, walnut liqueur, baked banana, hazelnuts, chocolate paste, brown rhum, candied cherries, gingerbread, raisins, toast, hints of burning wood and wet paper. Fruity taste, with a pleasant candied sweetness, raisins, dates and banana, light sourish accent, soft carbonation, full and creamy malt body, deeply caramelly but in a ’noble’, refined way, nutty and chocolatey impressions too, smooth and a bit oily, leading to a big malty finish, clear caramel sweetness (almost like caramel candy) but still nowhere cloying, a bit yeasty (bready) too, with a nice earthy and leafy, ’low tone’ hop bitterishness with a few mildly peppery ’stings’ and a big deal of warming, rhum-like alcohol, which does not become too wry or burning. Very pleasant sipper, but I hesitate to call this an English barley wine; it certainly has the sweetness and alcohol warmth of a barley wine, but lacks the ’vinous’ feel of it and the yeast and malt profile actually remind me more of a ’massieve ale’, or the style which is here referred to as ’abt’ and ’quadrupel’. Bears some resemblances with a Scotch ale as well.
