beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Dec 1, 2005 Deep, opaque-like, bloodied brown with a great tall capping of creamy ivory colored froth. Keeps a solid skim always present as well as a big fluffy collaring. Excellent lacing in extra thick webby sheets.
Aroma is clean, sweet, and mildly candyish with some toffee and purple grape jelly. Tiny notions to dark cherries and some dry yeasty spice.
Flavors are again, much like the smell, quite clean, sweet, mildly set in some soft doughy breads spread with apricot and grape jams. Slight caramel slides around the edges and back end as does a whisper of cocoa dryness. Finishes with a pick up of darker realmed fruityness; plummy. Spices are lightly playing in a fest of yeast, kinda citrusy at first then turns dry and earthy with some dark fruity returns. This all plays out very calmly with a very subtle tonality. Nothing brash here. Very easy going and mildly candyish, sweet, and sugared cookie-like. There’s something about that just seems to plain though.
Feel is small and tame with a yielding smoothness and clean texture. Perhaps close to a medium body, but the front is shy as is a good portion before the turn into the finish which does help induce a bit of interest in darker fruityness and a uniquely Belgian dryness.
Albeit, not one of the better Belgian darks I’ve had, but was fine enough to finish off without much problem. The 9% isn’t apparent and the tail end of this beer is the only thing I favored. rickgordon (3285), Göteborg, Sweden Nov 30, 2005 On draught at The Rover, Göteborg. Last years brew.
Red-brown. I found this to be a very dry, pale malty brew with vomit and pee notes. I seem to like vomit and pee. stouby (1932), Holbaek, Denmark Nov 24, 2005 2004, draught at The Rover.
Redbrown with beige head, mostly lasting. Aroma moderate/heavy malty, moderate hoppy and light yeasty (brown sugar, brown fruit). Flavor heavy sweet, bittersweet, long duration. Medium body, oily, soft carbonated. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Nov 21, 2005 Bottle and served in my GL snifter:
Pours a cloudy amber hue with a fading fizzy head and minimal lace, some small floaties towards the end. The aroma is quite estery with lots of fruits and yeast components, a touch of pale and bready malts, just a hint of allspice. The taste follows suit with big apricot, strawberry and orange zest flavors on top of a smooth yeast, wheat, and malt backbone. The finish had a surprising bite of bitters and moderate alcohol. The feel is a tad oily and soft. I like this, is there fruit in it? Sure seemed that way. RAYBOY01 (1813), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 14, 2005 Mainly sweet caramel malt with dried fruits and a citrusy bite. Kinda strange. I liked it...it’s easy enough drinking...but nothing that knocks you out. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 9, 2005 Pours a cloudy dark amber color with a thin offwhite head. Aroma and flavor of fruits and yeast. The body is light with an oily texture and low carbonation. MoritzF (4859), Bochum, Germany Nov 8, 2005 Updated: Jan 2, 2006(bottle, as "IJndejaars") Slightly hazy ruby red colour with a huge foamy off-white head. Very fruity (cranberries, strawberres) aroma with a peppery spice. Bittersweet flavour, medium body, moderate carbonation. Initially sweet malty taste with shy caramel notes and a fruity (cranberries, blackcurrants) palate, spicy, moderately dry and light bitter and lasting finish. Very tasty and enjoyable. pivnizub (4949), Bochum, Porúří, Germany Oct 29, 2005 Bottle: Cloudy , amber to reddish coloured, thin but stable firm head; fruity nose (strawberries !), also brandy and caramel; initial sweet malty taste; rather full bodied (no surprise....) with a creamy mouthfeel, quite sweet but not cloying; malty finish with a touch of tart fruitiness; sweet, but not too sweet, well quaffable strong brew, warming.
