The high carbonation and some sour aroma let’s suppose a light infection or fermentation problem, then confirmed when tasting it. It seems to be, behind that, a solid beer, with good body, caramel flavor and high bitterness.
2005-03-05, as IJnde Jaars, 6-4-8-3-14=35 Dark amber color; big head. Aroma of malt and vegetables. Good body, light fruitness, quite spicy, sweetness, malt but not enough. Strong bitter final, a bit alcoholic. malika (37), Switzerland Mar 7, 2005 Strong malty aroma, a bit alcoholic. Very strong malt taste, some roasted malt, warming. Quite strong final bitterness. barenada (211), Georgetown, Indiana, USA Mar 5, 2005 (bottle) Reminded me of a winter seasonal. Lots of fruit that I cannot quite define. Thick and strong, yet refreshing at the same time. I really wish I could drink more than one. TAR (2088), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Jan 27, 2005 Deep orange. Lathery off-white head yields stunning lacework and slowly forming patchy isles. Perfumey esters lurk beneath a wall of peaches, candied blueberries, mashed grapes, medicine, and licorice. Expansive carbonation boasts feathery creaminess. Medicinal discharge is clipped with sappy malts and rich candied grapes. Quite sticky, but with an evenly matched juicy malt profile which shows a bit of faint roast astringency, as well. Medicine grows as it warms while a meaty, syrup-doused peach flavor forms, but, remarkably, never becomes oversweet, largely due to its slippery fruitiness and palate-cleansing vaporous esters of ginger, anise, and clove. Succulent finish displays a deceptively dextrinous malt texture and flavor touched with pristine floral hop underpinnings and a placid trail of dried fruits and spicy esters. An extremely eccentric brew you either love or hate. Personally, I love it. Particularly that aroma! chriso (4683), London, Greater London, England Dec 11, 2004 OK, it’s chestnut colour. Yeasty malt aroma. The flavour has orangey hops, chocolate and more dark malt. Bittersweet finish - slightly tart if anything. Interesting, but somehow it didn’t all pull together perfectly. Draught at the Beer Circus Croydon (Christmas beers festival).
maeib (4677), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Dec 5, 2004 Draught Beer Circus Croydon. Definitely chestnut coloured beer with a loose head. A candy sugar aroma and taste with fruits coming through as well. The alcohol is quite hidden by the sweetness. duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Dec 5, 2004 Tap@The Beer Circus, Croydon, London. This was my first beer of the night and quite a hefty one to start on. Typical yeasty character that all t’Ij beers seem to have. Definitely on the sweet and slightly sticky side of things, with some dark fruit and caramel, with some light spice. Lots of warming alcohol. A big malty beer, pretty good. kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia Dec 5, 2004 Light caramel aroma with somce spice there too. Dark amber (CHESTNUT!) with a tan head. Sweet caramel, little alcohol tingle. Medium bodied, ok.
