kepano (239), Meudon, France Aug 21, 2006 Last in our second ’t IJ triptych was the terrific Turbock. Topped in a tuft of turgid white mousse the abyssal tangerine tone bathed in beautiful lace. Grassy scents of hay and asparagus typical of ’t IJ’s touch were articulated in conjunction with fresh pineapple, banana and mango. A warming winterly blend of chocolate and coriander quietly expresses the magnanimous attitude of this beer before it truly takes precedent on the palate. Dry, bitter coffee and chocolate flavors match the sweet spicy character induced by cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, coriander and nutmeg. Rich but quite refreshing and not out of place on a summer day.
Lubiere (3966), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jun 14, 2009 2006 bottle. A reddish amber bock with a thick dark off white head. A very pleasant aroma of candy sugar, orange peels, varnish, and light fruity esters. In mouth, veering on Belgian Tripel, with candy sugar, orange and rose water, nice light hopping, smooth and classy. Bottle from Hunsell, Nov. 2006. Danku Jorit! Golden with white head. Aroma of yeast and malt. Flavor is caramel with ripe fruit notes. hopscotch (5135), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Mar 25, 2009 Bottle… Pre-C&P’sLYFO Throwdown… Murky golden lager with a small, creamy, white head. Fantastic retention. The aroma offers caramel and nuts and is a touch acidic. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and very fizzy carbonation. Sweet caramel, nut and toffee flavors dominate. Decently bittered, but not enough to balance the malts – still, not cloyingly sweet. Finishes lightly sweet, but then bone-dry. Bottle provided by bu11zeye! GodOfThunder (668), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 19, 2009 Pours a cloudy golden color. Aromas are earthy, with funk, dust, dirt and a strong malt character. Flavor is funky and bready. Very good. Thanks to Hopscotch for this! Beerlando (1999), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 13, 2009 Bottle, courtesy hopscotch. The pours yields a cloudy, glowing, golden-yellow body with a small, foamy, off-white head. Minimal spotting dots the glass. Like the other t’ IJ beers I’ve had, this one sports a very Jolly Pumpkin-esque funk. There’s an etheral character to the nose, very yeasty and floral perfumy, with an underlying creamy malt base. Notes of sourdough bread and funked oak are there as well. Flavors are very similar, soft, creamy, almost imperial pils-like malts showing very bready and sweet, with a decent amount of floral hop character and funky, old oak. Medium-full and creamy on the palate, with balanced carbonation. Drinks easier than the 9% ABV would suggest. Damn nice beer. Very funky. I swear that the brewer must somehow be related to Ron Jeffries, because they think alike. KAF (435), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jan 30, 2009 2006 Bottle. Pours a rich clear amber with an enormous white head. Odd tart aroma (maybe it’s infected?) Definite aroma of pears. Also a hint of trees and caramel in the nose. Strong malt front with a punch of caramel notes. The tartness is still there but very subtle. Some light fruit presence such as apples. Ughsmash (3669), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jan 23, 2009 Bottled, Lot 76. Poured medium orange with a creamy, sticky, well-retained cap of yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up some sour fruity notes along with toffee and pale malt sweetness.. interesting spicy yeast and floral notes around (chamomile?).. it grew on me. The flavor had some pale and fruity malts at the core, again with a significant floral and some sour accents around.. spicy, dry, somewhat oxidized (or stale) finish. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation on the palate.. a bit too active and a tad sharp at the end for me.. otherwise good stuff. NoiZe (1231), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands Jan 15, 2009 Tap @ ’t Arendsnest. Named IJnde Jaars. Brown colored brew. Dusty, spicy aroma. Flavor is chocolate, sweet and some spices. Nice.
