The first beer to come out of our vats, back in 1985, making it the classic beer of Brouwerij ‘t IJ. It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger, blonde beers in Belgian tradition. Zatte more than lives up to expectations in this respect. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. A delicious beer that can be enjoyed in all seasons.

On tap. Sweet, light bubblegum medicinal aroma. Medium body, medium carbonation. Light cherry, pepto bismol, lemon, light woody resin, white bread. Has a nice crispness to it which is nice, not too sweet. Decent. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

[Draught at Café Dopey’s Elixer, Amsterdam, May 15] 5th rating of my Paris/Amsterdam trip. Pours a slightly hazy gold with an average size lasting creamy white head and some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is yeasty, sweet and fruity, a bit herbal and spicy and finally, with a hint of hops. Nice flavour, follows the aroma. Alcohol well hidden. Medium bodied. Really good Tripel, it impressed me.

Draught @ ’t IJ Brewpub, Amsterdam. Almost transparent golden colour, foamy white head. Creamy and sweet malts, Belgian yeasts: nicely balanced, typical Belgian triple. Finish lingers nicely. Medium carbonation, good body.

Mooie Nederlandse Tripel, nette schuimkraag, die wat snel dood slaat. Smaak is prima, geen echte bijzonderheden, gewoon een prima tripel

330ml Bottle at Café De Raedt, Amsterdam (€4.50):
This one proved to be quite a good first beer in Amsterdam, a very nice tripel that could easily rank alongside some of the Belgian offerings of the style that I’ve tried. Zatte had an excellent balance & a light, fruity taste that went down easy with very little of the alcohol showing. A solid effort & one I wouldn’t mind trying again, I just hope some ’t IJ beers start making it to the UK sometime soon.
