The first beer to come out of our vats, back in 1985, making it the classic beer of Brouwerij ‘t IJ. It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger, blonde beers in Belgian tradition. Zatte more than lives up to expectations in this respect. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. A delicious beer that can be enjoyed in all seasons.

At the brewery from the tap: Pours a cloudy gold with a white head. Aroma is yeasty, fruity, but somehow not characteristic of the tripel style... Taste is actually a good bit hoppy. The beer is a wee bit sweet. It leaves a lingering aftertaste. Quite dry. Not bad at all.

Tasted tap on 28/02/2014. Clear colour with a nice head. Some flowers on taste. That´s a nice Tripel bier. Very well balanced the 8% alcohol. Next one please!!!

330ml bottle from Amsterdam. Has a light floral, aromatic character, full of flavour but perhaps slightly too sweet and caramelly for me.

Hazy copper with big white head. Cloves, banana, apple, spices, sweet malts. Big yeasty bitterness. Medium bodied, average carbonation. Hmmm, lovely tripel, lots of spices and depth.

33cl bottle @ home. Hazy golden color, stronger white head, black sediment on the bottom and more haziness. Aroma sour fruity and slight alcohol in the nose, then banana, slight caramel, yeast, cereal, slightly earthy. Taste light sweetness, medium bitterness, a drop of sourness, and also slightly salty and umami, so quite complex. Closer to the bottom gives more bitterness, probably caused by the sedimented yeast, but the alcohol is well covered which is unexpected according to its smell. It has a full body, sticky texture, average carbonation, average bitter finish. Not too exciting but definitely a fine tripel.
