The first beer to come out of our vats, back in 1985, making it the classic beer of Brouwerij ‘t IJ. It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger, blonde beers in Belgian tradition. Zatte more than lives up to expectations in this respect. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. A delicious beer that can be enjoyed in all seasons.

330ml Bottle at Café De Raedt, Amsterdam (€4.50):
This one proved to be quite a good first beer in Amsterdam, a very nice tripel that could easily rank alongside some of the Belgian offerings of the style that I’ve tried. Zatte had an excellent balance & a light, fruity taste that went down easy with very little of the alcohol showing. A solid effort & one I wouldn’t mind trying again, I just hope some ’t IJ beers start making it to the UK sometime soon.

Reddish amber. Rapidly vanishing ivory head. Intense aromas of white flowers, bakery, citrus rind, coriander... Full body encompassing a good mixture of bitter and sour. Powerful, savoury, persistent. Strong, complex and nice.

Draught at the Belgian Beer Café Olivier (Leiden, The Netherlands). This is a true recap of the 1985 classic. A recommandation by the man behind the tap - and a good one for sure! Fruit flavours - yet no hoppy aroma’s - with some citrus tones, which made me think of a whitebeer. The nose, though very subtle, has bread and grains too. The taste has some very appreciated honey hints. The finish is sweet and reminds of the yeasts and the added spices. The mouth is rather dry. A very lovely tripel from Amsterdam.

Bottle 33cl. Hazy yellow golden colour with a small white head that lasts somewhat. Aroma reminds me of weizen beers, but I can sense citrus fruits and hops too. The taste starts dry and develops into a mild sweetness with a bitter undertone. The aftertaste is dry and bitter. Very nice!

On bottle in Amsterdam. Hazy golden orange color, ok foam. Medium/ Hugh aroma intensity ; fruity, light citrus and honey- ok yeast influence. Medium/ full body & complexity . Some sweetness , but balances well. Enjoyable ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
