3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Jokes (1453) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 18, 2004
Hazy golden with a tight, off-white head. The aroma is strongly yeasty with nice sweetness underneath. Raw dough, honey, clove, mango, sweet apples and perhaps some white pepper (or is that a touch of alcohol?). Sweet, almost sticky, body that is neither too full nor too thin. Good, but not outstanding, flavors of sweet fruit (apricot, orange, apple, mango), immense yeast (dry biscuits and pizza dough) and a touch of bitterness at the very end. Another strong offering from this fairly consistent brewer. It covers all of the bases well, with nothing truly standing out.

Has a nice clean aroma and taste. Notes of various fruits with a sweet-tart play on the tongue. Some spice and pepper thrown in.

Hazy yellow, with the spicy phenolics of achouffe in aroma and taste. Sweet with lemony citrus into the finish. €2.8
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 wunderbier (1434) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAR 22, 2005
UPDATED: APR 11, 2005 33 cL bottle, snifter, bottle conditioned. Hazy peach/amber body with a tall, frothy, white head. Bread, cookie, straw malts. Herbal hop aroma. Dough and leather yeast. Banana, grape, apple, vanilla, and pepper aromas. Overall, aroma is yeasty first and malty second. Cookie dough...or dough cookie, if you will. Moderate to heavy sweetness, light acidity upfront. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter, lightly acidic in the finish. Hmm...there’s a distinct yeasty sourness throughout. Still reminds me of cookie dough. Medium-full body, creamy/soft texture, lively carbonation. The bottom line is: I prefer my tripels with a little less yeast and a bit more bitterness, but this is pretty damn good. Be careful at the end of the pour, this is a strong tasting yeast strain.

Could be something wrong with my brain as the t’IJ beers do have appear to have a definate likeness - not a bad thing of course given how impressive the house style is. Spice and hops on the nose - nice. More of the same on the palate. Taste profile is very well supported with a thick layer of strong malts and alcohol. To my mind might need a touch more weight to be truly deserving of abbey tripel status. Nothwithstanding a distinguished beer.

[Sampled in 2005.] Another nice brew from Holland. Notes of flowers, some sourness, stickyness, yeast, spices and alcohol. Okay brew!
