Beerlando (1153), Orlando, Florida, USA May 11, 2008 Aged about 2 years. Pours a dark, hazy, burnt sienna color. A small, frothy beige head settles to a wispy film almost instantly. Virtually no lacing noted. Aromas are sweet and malty, with heaps of caramel, brown sugar, figs, and raisons showing. Candied lemon peel adds a unique citrus note, while earthy, spicy hops and cloves linger in the background. Flavors are again intensely sweet, almost English barley wine-like. Brown sugar, caramel, and a touch of nougat are reinforced by candied dark fruits. Minimal hop presence in this one. Nutmeg and cloves add a woody, earthy feel. Very yeasty as well. Some tart apple shows in the finish. The body is thick and sugary, sitting heavy in the stomach. This one is just too intensely sweet for my liking. Just not my style.
SETANTA (555), Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 2, 2008 On tap at Ebenezer Kezers in Lovell, ME... poured fairly clean and just a touch fizzy. Smelled of fresh fruit, sourness detectable, a hint of malt. Was fairly sour tasting with a touch of Brett horsiness. Skinnyviking (2394), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 22, 2008 Bottle. Miedium high but quickly disappearing offf-white head. Hazy dark orange red body. Vineous spicy fruity caramel roasted malt aroma. Pretty carbonated and yet smooth and mild fealing flavor of raisins plums caramel and bitterness in the background. Alcohol well hidden. Low carbonation. Long aftertaste. nearbeer (1091), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 18, 2008 33 cl. Opaque, violet-chestnut with a small head that makes a lasting creamy ring. Aroma is earthy, spicy-sweet raisin bread with sugary icing. Flavor is dark fruit mulled with winter spices - juniper, brown sugar, maybe some slight nutmeg, lemon peel and a dash of white pepper. Some hints of sour leather, and a delicate woody bitterness tame the big malt and show up more noticeably in the finish. Medium body is a little thin and slightly dry. grimreeser (613), Minnesota, USA Jun 3, 2008 Pours an almost flat dirty murcky brown. Aroma is dark fruit, caramel, brown sugar, and spices. Flavor is a little dull, some sweetness. Thin and watery. Alcohol is well hidden. jayg (997), Florida, USA May 24, 2008 Bottle. Hazy dark amber color, moderately thick off-white head slowly dissipates. Very sweet malty apricot and dark cane sugar aroma. Taste follows suit, with fruity notes more reminiscent of dried apricots and plum than citrus. Belgian yeastiness is there but is overpowered by the sweetness. Beerlando’s right on in that this almost tastes like a Belgian take on an English BW, and one executed too far on the sweet side at that. Just decent is all.
