ZBF 08. Hazy, murky brown pour with a thin light brown head. Aroma of yeast and fruity esters. Flavor of toasted malt, fruits and yeast. I like most t’Smisje beers, but this one is disapointing.

Dark tan foamy head. Yeasty aroma that goes down very smooth with a nice balance.

Poured a hazy deep amber color with a large beige head. Yeasty aroma with notes of smoke, dry spice, figs and plums. Light fruit to the start of the flavor. Plump raisin flesh. Dry finish with a light spice. Bitterness on the finish with some warming.

Stubby bottle and served in my Expedition snifter: A very deep dark brown with a huge tan rocky head and excellent lace. The aroma has notes of milk chocolate and milk sourness, bready and toasty malts, star anise, fig, and a dusty yeast ester. The taste starts with a strange combination of twangy fruits, lactic sourness. liquorice and sweet chocolate with a finish of dry herbs and spices. The mouth feel is sprite and sharp, biting and a tad chalky. This is sort of a cross between a Belgian Strong Ale and an Imperial Stout with a hint of sourness for good measure. If you expand your expectations of what the genre is then you will find a complex tasty little gem here.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a barely transparent amber mahogany with a large, airy, wispy-lacing beige head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and toasted malts with a good amount of bready Belgian yeast and a touch of milk chocolate. Body starts with the typical Belgian effervescence and a rich dark caramely malty sweetness toward a slightly drier, biscuity malty finish. Definitely not your typical imperial stout, but it’s a pretty good Belgian Quadrupel nonetheless.

ZBF08. Fruity aroma. Very dark brown colour, muddy. The flavour is liquorice, some mild anis. Roasted and creamy. Not as nice as it sounds.

Bottle@Home. Fruity sour aroma with hints of cola and light roasted, very yeasty. Dark brown color, irregular beige head, good lace. Light sweet, very fruity, chocolate, light roasted bitterness, yeasty. Alcoholic and warming. Nice but I wouldn’t call it an Imperial Stout.

Super cool miketd bonused this to me, right on. It poured with a brown color, but that did not phase me much, I am not looking for the prototypical Impy with this beer. The head was humongous though, all thick and bubbly and very Belgian. The aroma is sweet Belgian yeast dough brownies with chocolate chip highlights. Taste is not as central on the sweet brownie chocolate but turns into a light brown sugar sweetness. A thicker mouthfeel with some reduced carbonation (weird when looking at the large head). Absolutely no sense of alcohol, low on hops and bitterness. For me its another Regenboog hit and another Belgian Strong masquerading as an Imperial Stout success.
33cL bottle, Rodenbach smaller tulip glass, thanks again Mike.

Bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Deep amber orange beer, thick tan head. Aroma is very Belgian, sweet and raisiny with a very plummy, figgy sweetness. Sweet and fruity with the classic t’smisje yeastiness. Soft brown sugar flavour, some light banana and rich spiciness. A bit of chocolate and a little bit rummy. Earthy and slighly peppery. Rich spiciness. Not really an Imperial stout, or any other kind of stout for that matter, but it is pretty solid nonetheless.

Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota and shared by brewfiend. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thick and lumpy beige head that has some good retention and lacing. Aroma of dark roasted caramel malt, some toffee, a touch of yeast funk, and a hint of chocolate. Taste is slightly mild tart with a sharp spice, dark chocolate, with some yeast background. Finish has a semi-dry yeast aftertaste with a light chocolate flavor. Tasty! But a little light for an Imperial Stout character.
