33 cl. bottle @ ít Brugs Beertje // label has a horse suspended in the air, subtle // ruby dark brown, lightly tanned head // smells of light yeast, fruity, malts, bread & dark fruits, description fits that of a Belgian Dark Strong Ale // taste is burned toast, descend amount, charred malts but no accompanying stout body, instead a strong Belgian Ale body, heavy on Belgian yeast, berries, roasted malts, lots of burned grains, some caramelized sugar, esters, spices // body is way too carbonated, seriously dude, this is hard to drink, like blended with sparkling water; second Smisje beer to do that, infection? Small brewery, I have a feeling that none of the Special Smisje beer are being made anymore, have they been made recently? I am confused // didnít expect a real Imperial Stout, in that regards, this is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel, ok as a Belgian ale, made the flavours fit a bit more together & turn down the carb. // donít think this made anymore

Draft at the Birch. Delivers with the visuals you want in an imperial stout ... frothy, deep, dark, red and brooding. The aroma is sweet and foreboding. Drinks with a kick of prune and alcohol. Quite the entertaining beer! (#4693, 7/14/2012)

Tap. Pours tawny brown with creamy, off-white head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is toasted malt, light smoke, figs, raisins, floral hops, and earthy notes. Flavor is roast malt forward with good supporting dark fruit esters and faint hops; dry, smokey finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

There are many, many things you could call this beer and have it turn out alright, but if this is an imperial stout, then somebody really screwed the pooch. Pours amber-red, not even the color of a brown ale, much less a stout. Smells super-fruity with a pilsnerish undertone. Weird as shit for the implied style. If I didnít know better, Iíd think the gentlemen at Brouwerij Smisje slapped a trendy label on a subpar dark Belgian Ale and hoped us stupid Americans would just pass off the beerís inconsistencies as Belgian flair. But calling this beer a stout is like calling Bud Platinum a barleywine. Mild bitterness, no roasted, chocolate, or coffee notes, and an offputting sweetness that mixes with that reoccurring pilsner note. I dare you to blind taste this beer and guess itís an Impy Stout.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours brown with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of spicy yeast, a little roasted malts, and floral hops. Flavor the same, not like an imperial stout but good for a Belgian beer. Average texture. A decent Belgian beer, but not the best stout.

Cloudy chocolate brown beer. Huge foamy biscuit coloured head. Soft malt nose, hint of smoke. Fresh tasty malt, quite fruity for the style and with a little milk chocolate and a pleasing amount of smoke. Finishes with more of the same. Interesting RIS, not rich, thick and sumptuous but wins with itís dark fruits and chocolate.

Squat bottle from Caponeís. Pours clear ruby brown with Brobdingnagian khaki 4-finger head that laces copiously. The repour gives floaties and more turbidity. Nose is heavy maple syrupy malt, vinous fruit, oaky bourbon. Tastes rich, fruity, with a big vinous fruity flavor, some dark roasty malt, and yeasty funk. Medium to light palate heft. This one was a letdown.

Pours light for an impy stout - dark amber brown honey in color with a nice light tan head. The aroma is sweet almost like a barleywine with some boozy notes. The flavor of the Belgian yeast is dominant here with sweet malty notes, differentiating it from the American Imperial Stouts for sure.

33 cl bottle @ Brussels.
Rated on 20100718.
Pours murky brown color with small head. Aroma of ripe and a bit sour fruits, vegetables, mild liquorice notes, dark malts, dry chocolate and hops. Flavor of ripe fruits, malts, chocolate notes, vegetables and spices. Quite odd mesh of flavours fighting for dominance. One of the worst impys Iíve tasted.

Hazy reddish brown with a lasting beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, spicy and yeasty. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. Why is this classified as an Imperial stout? 130312
